Queen Elizabeth ll has been on the throne for 60 Years ~ Celebrate with us!

Queen Elizabth II has been on the throne for 60 years, so 2012 is a very special year for us here in the United Kingdom, as we are celebrating her Diamond Jubilee, and so want every one to join in and enjoy this histroric occasion.
The celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

What do you think about the Monarchy, maybe you would like to see it abolished, but the Queen is known and loved by many throughout the world, and she has travelled more than any other Sovereign in history

In October 1940, when she was just 14, she made her first public speech in a live BBC radio broadcast for children, especially to those who were being evacuated, and how the world has changed since those days!

In 1970, the Queen and Prince Phillip initiated a new practice - the "walkabout" - so they could meet as many people as possible during a visit.

"It's an honour and pleasure to create a special Squidoo Page to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, and I hope you will enjoy it!

"I have in sincerity pledged myself to your service, as so many of you are pledged to mine. Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust." Queen Elizabeth II

"The lessons from the peace process are clear; whatever life throws at us, our individual responses will be all the stronger for working together and sharing the load" Queen Elizabeth II

Queen's Diamond Jubilee message in full

Today, as I mark 60 years as your Queen, I am writing to thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you have given to me and Prince Philip over these years and to tell you how deeply moved we have been to receive so many kind messages about the Diamond Jubilee.

In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighbourliness, examples of which I have been fortunate to see throughout my reign and which my family and I look forward to seeing in many forms as we travel throughout the United Kingdom and the wider Commonwealth.

I hope also that this Jubilee year will be a time to give thanks for the great advances that have been made since 1952 and to look forward to the future with clear head and warm heart as we join together in our celebrations.

I send my sincere good wishes to you all.
ELIZABETH R

Queen Elizabeth II marks the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne. A small proportion of Her Majesty's subjects may recall the reign of her father, or even her uncle and her grandfather. But for the vast majority, the Queen is the only head of state they have known - a constant companion through their entire lives, the still point of an often turbulent world.

For the six decades the Queen has been an enduring figure in the life of the country as head of state, during her reign she has seen 11 prime ministers come and go with David Cameron her 12th, while Barack Obama is also the 12th US president to hold office since Her Majesty acceded to the throne.

To have reached this milestone is an extraordinary achievement, as well as a testament to her family's longevity. Only one other British monarch has done so previously: Queen Victoria, whose Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in 1897.

For Her Majesty, what should be a joyful event will inevitably be tinged with sadness. The anniversary of her accession - which she learned of while on safari in Kenya - is also the anniversary of the day that her father died, and her mother began a 50-year widowhood.

Her Golden Jubilee, in 2002, was accompanied by personal loss, with the deaths in quick succession of both her mother and her sister.

Do you remember Queen Elizabeth's coronation?

Therefore I am sure that this, my Coronation, is not the symbol of a power and a splendor that are gone but a declaration of our hopes for the future, and for the years I may, by God's Grace and Mercy, be given to reign and serve you as your Queen.

What Diamond Jubilee Celebration gift from Zazzle would you like to give the Queen and why?

Someone said to me the other day, why not order one of your specially designed Jubilee products from Zazzle and send it to the Queen, and I was actually thinking about that, but what would be best, would you like to help me choose?
I thought of designing a dog bowl with Corgis on, as that would be very original perhaps, but it would be nice to send her something she might even use herself.
She has acquired an iPad, so maybe an iPad case would be ideal, what do you think?

"Queen Elizabeth II has acquired a tablet computer iPad. Imperial lady saw a newfangled device from their grandchildren, and unable to resist the temptation. 85-year old Elizabeth so liked iPad, she immediately asked to buy her the same. How to use the tablet, the queen told the grandchildren. At Buckingham Palace said that the Queen was delighted with the tablet. She especially liked the simplicity of its use"

Royal Quotations to inspire us!

I have been aware all the time that my peoples, spread far and wide throughout every continent and ocean in the world, were united to support me in the task to which I have now been dedicated with such solemnity.
Queen Elizabeth II

I have behind me not only the splendid traditions and the annals of more than a thousand years but the living strength and majesty of the Commonwealth and Empire; of societies old and new; of lands and races different in history and origins but all, by God's Will, united in spirit and in aim.

What is the Queen's life really like?

A day in the life of The Queen.

Some are public duties, such as ceremonies, receptions and visits within the United Kingdom or abroad.

Other duties are carried out away from the cameras, but they are no less important. These include reading letters from the public, official papers and briefing notes; audiences with political ministers or ambassadors; and meetings with her Private Secretaries to discuss daily business and her future diary plans.

Even when she is away from London, in residence at Balmoral or Sandringham, she receives official papers nearly every day of every year and remains fully briefed on matters affecting her realms.

In front of the camera or away from it, The Queen's duties go on, and no two days in her life are ever the same.

MEETING THE QUEEN ~ SPECIAL MEMORIES!

BBC News - When children meet the Queen
Throughout the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year we are featuring some of your memories of meeting and seeing Queen Elizabeth II.
While children have formed an important backdrop to the various celebrations and landmarks of the Queen's 60 years on the throne, it is impossible to predict what a child will do - whether it is waving a flag or breaching security.
Many of you have sent in your recollections of meeting the Queen when you were a child, or of seeing your own children meet her.
Here are some of the memories you shared:
People in the West Country meet the Queen on her Jubilee Tour
Hundreds of flag-waving people turned out to meet the Queen yesterday as she continued her two-day tour of the west country.
People telling fo their meeting with the Queen
"THOUSANDS of people waving flags gave the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh a welcome to remember at Margam Park. The royal couple arrived at the Port Talbot...!
Headteacher of Dunvant, Rebecca Griffiths, said: "Everyone is overwhelmed. I am sure we are going to be going back to do something for our website on this.

"It is absolutely fantastic."

Joyce Williams, who turned 81 yesterday, is a volunteer at Morriston Hospital. She was among many at the event who had the chance to meet the Queen.

"How many people get to share their birthday with the Queen?" she said.

"It will be a birthday I won't forget. She spoke to each of us in the group and seemed genuinely interested. She looked beautiful."

Founder of Swansea-based charity Peace Mala, Pam Evans, said it was an "incredible honour" to be at the celebration.

She said: "She was really lovely and spoke to each one of us."

What is Buckingham Palace like inside?

Originally known as Buckingham House, the building which forms the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1705 on a site which had been in private ownership for at least 150 years. It was subsequently acquired by George III in 1761[2] as a private residence for Queen Charlotte, and known as "The Queen's House". During the 19th century it was enlarged, principally by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, forming three wings around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace finally became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. The last major structural additions were made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the East front which contains the well-known balcony on which the Royal Family traditionally congregate to greet crowds outside. However, the palace chapel was destroyed by a German bomb in World War II; the Queen's Gallery was built on the site and opened to the public in 1962 to exhibit works of art from the Royal Collection.

Queen Victoria, the first monarch to reside at Buckingham Palace, moved into the newly completed palace upon her accession in 1837.

The Big Lunch!

The fourth annual Big Lunch will fall on the same weekend as the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. So anyone who would like to celebrate and commemorate the Queen's 60 year reign can do so by holding a Big Jubilee Lunch!

As announced by Buckingham Palace The Big Jubilee Lunch will be a part of the main programme of events over the central weekend of Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June 2012. A special 4-day bank holiday - Saturday 2nd to Tuesday 5th June - will take place so there will be plenty of time for you to enjoy lunching in your community.

Some 10 million people came out in sunny 1977 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee so we hope a large number of people will take part in The Big Lunch for the first time in 2012 - joining the best part of 2 million of us that have been doing it for the last 3 years!

The beauty of The Big Lunch is that people themselves decide everything about their own event. The venue can be wherever you want or have space, the theme whatever you fancy - food and people are the key ingredients. Quite simply we want to get as many people as possible to sit down and have lunch with their neighbours on the first Sunday in June. After all The Big Lunch is all about community, friendship and fun!

Happy Birthday Your Majesty! ~ The Queen turns 86

With Diamond Jubilee celebrations gathering pace around her, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II first passes another landmark on Saturday, her 86th birthday.

The eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary would have been expected to play merely a supporting role in the monarchy when she was born on April 21st 1926.

But when her father George suddenly found the crown thrust in his direction following Edward the 8th's abdication, the young princess became heir to the throne aged just 10.

Her adolescence was overshadowed by the Second World War, which she and her sister largely spent in the relative safety of Windsor Castle, west of London, retreating during air-raids to the cellars where the Crown Jewels were stored.

Two years after the end of the war, Elizabeth celebrated her 21st birthday while visiting South Africa and marked the occasion with a broadcast address dedicating herself to the service of the Commonwealth.

A fascinating video appears on this page, giving extracts from the Queen's long and eventful life. Well worth watching.
Video: Gun salute for the Queen's birthday - Telegraph
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired the salute at noon in Hyde Park while several other military bases across the country also carried out the tradition in honour of the Queen's birthday.
The custom dates back to the early days of sail when ships visiting foreign ports would discharge their guns before entering, proving they were empty and that the visit was peaceful.
A basic salute uses 21 rounds, but in Hyde Park an extra 20 rounds are added because it is a Royal Park.
I'm sure you will enjoy this version of the British National Anthum with photographs of the Queen.

I so like and admire her. She has dedicated her life to her people. And she shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever even though she's well into her 80s. I'm sure quite a lot of events will be televised on Canadian TV and I look forward to watching what I can.
