Choosing the right diamond blade for the job.

Ranked #15,433 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #242,444 overall

There are lots of different types of diamond saw blades. Understanding the way various kinds of diamond blades work is very important when choosing a blade for a particular job.

How diamond blades work.

Diamonds are extremely hard and are capable of grinding away relatively less hard materials like concrete, stone and masonry.

Diamond blades have a segmented or continuous cutting rim made of tiny diamonds embedded into a "matrix". These tiny diamonds eventually crack and break away, so the matrix is designed to wear at a similar pace allowing fresh new diamonds to constantly be exposed throughout the life of the blade.

Softer materials like asphalt are more abrasive than harder materials such as concrete. This means that a blade designed to cut asphalt needs to have a harder matrix to stand up to asphalt's abrasive properties.

The general rule:

Harder materials require a softer matrix and softer materials require a harder matrix.

Diamond blade applications.

There are specific types of diamond blades for cutting each of the following materials:

  • Green Concrete (Freshly laid un-cured concrete)

  • Asphalt

  • Brick

  • Masonry Block

  • Paver Blocks

  • Cured Concrete

  • Reinforced Cured Concrete

  • Refractory

  • Glass
