Jewelry Trends in 2008
This lens is a place to get together and discuss jewelry, retailing, trends, imports, and anything about jewels!
As the season cools down, the jewelry colors are heating up!!
We all expect to see warm tones in jewelry designs as the year nears its conclusion, but what may surprise many jewelry lovers is that some of the old favorite jewel tones will be a must-have for the upcoming fall and winter season.
As with me, alot of ladies favorite color is blue. The fall & winter 2007-2008 color trends suggest that this popular shade will remain in style, which means blue topaz, aquamarine, sapphire, and tanzanite will be a staple for every jewelry wardrobe. Try Iolite if beautiful tanzanite is a bit out of your budget.
Among the other favorites are shades of purple and pink, which means amethyst and pink topaz or their cubic zirconia substitutes will be hot picks for fall and winter. ~Pink is hot!~ It's dramatic and fun! Whether it is clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry, accessories, or even home décor—pink in all its wonderful nuances and color depths is sizzling and sassy, fresh as spring, and so today.
"...I need your love to keep me warm...."
When you think of yellow, you probably think of the sun and the warm summer months that typically go along with it. But, guess what. Even though the sun may not be at its strongest during the fall and winter months, the upcoming season is going to be a hot one for jewelry lovers.
Believe it or not, one of the fall & winter 2007-2008 popular jewelry colors is yellow! This means that your simulated canary diamond jewelry will look perfect when paired with your cold weather wardrobe. In addition, citrine, yellow topaz or their cubic zirconia substitutes will bring some welcome sunshine ( and some love! ) into your life as you remain on top of the seasonal jewelry trends. ~YEA!~
On a final note to the upcoming fall & winter 2007-2008 Jewelry Color Trends remember that some of the traditional favorites will be returning. Among them, shades of pumpkin, gray and chocolate brown will once again be a wise choice for fashion conscious consumers. What does this mean for jewelry lovers? Quite simply, it means that smoky quartz, simulated chocolate and/or champagne diamonds will be in style and on trend!

Designer Gold!
Since time immemorial, this lustrous metal has held people in awe and amazement.
Gold jewelry is now crafted keeping changing trends and fashion in mind. You can pick up exquisite pieces like jewelry rings and gold charms and even baby jewelry in various hues and shades. White, rose and pink gold jewelry find many takers. Colored alloys such as nickel, palladium and copper are added to the precious metal to craft intricate patterns in colored gold jewelry. Gold has been a favorite with jewelers on account of its beauty and ease of workmanship. Fashion jewelry is a rage with younger women - hip-hop earrings, beaded jewelry and jewelry set with precious stones.
Body piercing jewelry also finds favor with many. Jewelry is an excellent gift for someone you love. The sparkle in the woman's eyes can only be complemented by diamonds.
Custom designed jewelry items set in diamonds or zircon can be an everlasting symbol of your feelings. Check out jewelry catalogs to find out prices and design options. Designer jewelry appeals to those who wish to buy one-of-a-kind ornaments and gifts such as jewelry watch and antique jewelry. Wedding jewelry is an important segment of the jewelry industry. No bride is complete without being adorned by jewelry.
There are specialty designers who focus on wedding pieces to make your union with your loved one a unique experience.
For a one-of-a-kind look..... Design Your Own Ring!
This is great for weddings or an everyday style.
Men's Jewelry Gets New Outlook!
Jewelry design experts say Men's Jewelry is not just a passing fad. In fact, designers and retailers are devoting more time, attention, and store space to Men's Jewelry than ever before!
Men today are showing a desire to want to show their identity to the world, and they're at ease and confident enough to complement a watch with a bracelet, necklace, or ring. And, now more varied forms of jewelry have become socially acceptable. But what kind of jewelry do modern men want? What catches their eye? What do they think catches the ladies' eyes?
My research has found that old and new styles are merging. Recognizably masculine pieces are being paired with a fresh, feminine twist, and designers are taking advantage of the growing trend of genderless fashions. Soft and lustrous Tahitian Pearls are being incorporated with leather for a sensuous male touch. White gold and rubber is an emerging combination seen in bracelets and necklaces for men.
Cufflinks are more popular than ever. Classic designs in gold, silver or platinum are always a big hit for the conservative businessman. Integrating diamonds, black onyx, malachite, garnets, rubies or sapphires represents a novel departure for the sophisticated man who likes to match accessories with his attire.
And, men don't have to be professional athletes or rock stars to wear earrings these days. Handcrafted designer pieces in silver or platinum can create an elegant blend of contemporary masculinity. A diamond stud is perfect for a night out on the town!

Eco-Friendly Diamonds!
....a new alternative to engagement rings....
Promise her the world, and show her you'll care for it as well. Alright you guys, forget blood diamonds. To show your beautiful fiance' just how much she means to you, consider getting an earth-friendly engagement ring!
There is so much controversy involved with mining diamonds, that a lot of couples have opted to skip the icey bobbles entirely. For the bling-thirsty yet globally conscious, there are alternatives!
You won't have to sacrifice glitz or contribute to the unethical treatment of miners thanks to San Francisco-based Brilliant Earth. The business was launched by Beth Gerstein and Eric Grossberg as a result of their love for each other and the Earth. Eric was stumped because he couldn't find an ethical source for the diamonds, so he created Brilliant Earth as an alternative to the unpopular industry.
"All of our diamonds come from Canadian mines that follow environmentally sustainable practices and are committed to delivering high quality gems. Our well-established suppliers authenticate the source of their diamonds as conflict free and follow established domestic business practices."
In the past few years Canadian mines, such as the Ekati Mine, have come into their own as suppliers of high quality stones. Once considered only a source of smaller gems (.50 carats and under), new techniques in mining have exposed larger gem-quality goods to the market. The Canadian mining industry has generally practiced eco-friendly techniques from the start and provided valuable labor jobs to the local populace.
As part of its mission to promote industry-wide change, they work in partnership with advocacy groups to promote awareness about conflict diamonds, labor and mining issues, and environmental concerns in the industry. Brilliant Earth also dedicates 5% of its profits to directly benefit local African communities harmed by the diamond industry.

Colors Forecast 2008!

By Melanie SparkA trend implies something that is turning in a specific direction, or something that is changing. As the new year approaches, jewelry lovers can expect to see some neutral tones in jewelry. Citrine, grey pearls, lemon quartz and champagne diamonds will be smart picks for those who want to be in with the trends. When it comes to diamonds, one affordable alternative may be champagne or chocolate cubic zirconia, which is recognized as the finest diamond simulant in the world. This popular manmade stone is created to mimic a flawless diamond, which would be a significant investment in the world of jewelry. When recreated in cubic zirconia
Among a handful of remaining popular color choices for the upcoming spring and summer of 2008 are blue, which makes blue topaz and aquamarine a fun way to make a colorful statement in fashion. In addition, hues of purple will lend to the popularity of amethyst while shades of green will add even more value to the already desirable peridot gemstone.
If you're in the market for something hot next summer, any of the above choices will make the season even brighter for you and anyone you may choose to give the gift of jewelry. If you can't quite afford the genuine gemstones, you can find terrific deals in the colors of cubic zirconia.
If, on the other hand, you are someone who buys only what she likes and doesn't cater to current trends, you can still enjoy knowing what's in fashion for the upcoming season. If you already own blue topaz, aquamarine, citrine, pearls or even cubic zirconia featuring the champagne color, you can take great pride in knowing that your choices in jewelry are those that everyone will be searching for this summer. And if you're looking to add more pieces to your collection, there's no better time to find a wide selection of jewelry featuring your favorite colors and gemstones than when they are a part of the upcoming trends.
Trends In Pearls!
One of today's hottest pearl styles is to wear multiple strands of pearls. To take your look from demure to dramatic, layer on the pearls! This sassy secret has worked wonders since the beginning of time. Imagine a cascade of pearl strands swinging over your simple black sheath or sweater set.Mix different pearl sizes and lengths with reckless abandon (though keeping your pearls close in color produces the best effect). Multiple strands of Pearls work for both day and evening. They look best with simple crew or V-necklines, although the adventurous may layer them flirtatiously in an unbuttoned neckline of a blouse or shirt. Pastel colors are in and freshwater pearls are available in natural colors that range from pink to peach to lavender. Multi strand pastel freshwater pearls in multiple colors with a large silver clasp are perfect summer evening wear. A single strand of pink or peach freshwater is fashion dynamite with a hot pink or peach bikini.
Pearl Dangles are Hot!!!
Long, swinging pearl earrings are the number one fashion choice. Sexy pearl chandelier styles are perfect for evening and long, geometric pearl earrings in white and yellow gold have become the look of choice for daytime. Sensuous, shoulder-sweeping pearl earrings create a feeling of glamour like nothing else!
Pearl Bangles are Back!
Arms are on the fashion fast track right now. Pearl bangles and pearl bracelets, big and small have taken center stage.
Nature Designs Dominate Trends in '08
Jewelry this season is a bejeweled museum of natural history. Buds and blossoms are fresh off the stem. Animals, birds, and insects have legs and ears, wings and beaks. Fruit is ripe and round, ready for picking. Although nature has long inspired the jeweler's art, these three-dimensional models are no longer confined to the whimsical brooch. Roses perch on the finger. A vine twists around the wrist. Wings extend and jewelry takes flight into new levels of dimension. Pieces both small and large have taken on more depth. Delicate small diamond stud earrings by Dalumi are cupped in curved petals that leave the earlobe. Or, at the other end of the scale, rings by Sevan Bicakci are piled with insects and flowers and all manner of garden friends or a flock of butterflies to unheard-of levels of boldness. This is jewelry for collectors. The ring in the above picture is Mediterranean coral, ebony, and 18k rose gold. Designed by Di Luca 1929 of Italy, (39) (081) 882-4666, it is absolutley stunning!

Gothic Jewelry: Dark, Sexy and Mysterious
......you know you've always wanted to try it..... ;-)
Gothic jewelry, or darkside jewelry, as opposed to 'light,' evokes images of the macabre and the preternatural: vampires, the dead and undead, spirits, black magic and the black arts. As such, artisans craft items that would appeal to a person's dark or gothic side. There is an abundance of e-commerce websites and specialty stores whose emphasis is on jewelry and the darkside. In these places, a person will be able to find gothic jewelry such as pentacle pendants, gothic cross necklaces, spider-and-web piercings, and more. Also known as pagan jewelry, gothic body ornaments are made from many types of materials, but they are typically available in gold, sterling silver and pewter. They may come plain or be encrusted with jewels. Many pieces of gothic jewelry have their roots in esoteric sources, such as signs and symbols used in ancient Egyptian lore or those employed in Celtic rituals. Other pieces of gothic jewelry are timeless icons representing the eerie: coffin-shaped rings, heavily ornate cross brooches, earrings shaped like the heads of howling wolves.
Slave bracelets, also known as handflowers or maille bracelets, are also popular examples of gothic jewelry. These look like chain mail, or pieces of woven metal. They are different from conventional bracelets in that they are worn not just on the wrist, but on practically the whole hand, and their intricate patterns are sure to attract attention. Bib and choker necklaces are also popular gothic accessories. Catalogues of gothic jewelry oftentimes include so-called 'poison' rings or bracelets. These items have a small compartment where the wearer can presumably keep very small or fine materials, such as powder. Maille, chandelier or dangling earrings are also available to complete one's overall look of mystery.
Gothic jewelry is easy to wear and can be used to dress up or dress down. They are easily available and the variety offered is endless. Because they depict arcane symbols and figures, gothic jewelry imparts a sense of mystery and secrecy. Popular among both the young and not-so-young, gothic jewelry may be dark, but not dreary; ornate, but not tawdry. In fact, it is just the opposite: jewelry and the darkside - a hauntingly beautiful combination.
HOT!! The Guardian Eye Charm Protects You from The Evil Eye
......dateline....January 30, 2008......
Today, popular online jewelry merchant Mybargainjewels.com announced the launch of a new line of charm bracelets dubbed "The Guardian Eye."Each bracelet is handmade of Murano glass beads and fits any wrist size. At first glance, these trendy bracelets are simple enough, yet shrouded in thousands of years of superstition. In fact, even today, people across the Middle East, Latin America, North Africa and Asia wear such charms and jewelry to protect themselves from the so-called "curse of the evil eye." According to legend and myth, whenever someone of lesser means casts an envious glance your way, you could be struck with the evil eye curse.
"You might suddenly fall ill or experience an extended stroke of bad luck," says Sossi Reynolds, Founder and President of MyBargainJewels.com. "Worst case scenario: serious bodily injury or even death could result from the evil eye. The curse is nothing to be scoffed at," continues Mrs. Reynolds. There are even books dedicated to it, including titles such as: "The Evil Eye: The Origins and Practices of Superstition" by Frederick Thomas Elworthy; and "Terrors of The Evil Eye Exposed" by Henri Gamache.
But Mrs. Reynolds encountered an intriguing problem in naming her new jewelry line because, technically speaking, "The Evil Eye" could refer to the curse or to the piece of jewelry itself. So, after much consideration, she aptly named her new jewelry line, "The Guardian Eye."
"You see, the bracelet beads have a little eye design on them. This eye is said to deflect the evil eye curse. But naming it the same thing is confusing. That's why The Guardian Eye makes sense. My Guardian Eye Bracelets deflect the evil eye curse."
Whether or not the general public believes in the curse, Sossi assures us that "these bracelets have been around for hundreds of years, maybe even thousands" and they are increasingly popular.
Evil Eye bracelets are available from www.mybargainjewels.com, a site famous for offering quality jewelry at wholesale prices.

2008 Designer Showcase at Forbes
....Jan. 7, 2008......
Jewelry artist Leila Tai will be one of the featured fine jewelers at the 2008 Designer Showcase to be launched at The Forbes Galleries in New York City by the National Jewelry Institute. The exhibit, which will run from April 25 to June 28, will celebrate works of individuality by approximately 25 designers.
Several of Tai's pieces to be exhibited are part of her most recent collection called "Spring," which utilizes the plique-à-jour technique. The technique is a style of enameling in which enamels are fused into the openings of a metal filigree network with no backing, producing an effect that resembles stained glass.
"Each piece is one-of-a-kind, and many offer built-in movement and flexibility," Tai said in a media release. "Aside from the fact that I enjoy the long and focused creation process, this technique gives a realistic edge to my pieces. Creating jewelry as art objects that can be worn is my way of paying tribute to life and all creation."
Tai was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, and studied art education at the American University of Beirut. She furthered her studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, receiving her master of fine arts degree in metal work. She has also studied with jewelry designers such as the late Donald Clafflin, who was associated with both Tiffany and Bulgari, and Robert Kulicke and Jean Stark, from whom she learned much of her plique-à-jour, cloisonné and granulation techniques.
After several years in the fine-jewelry industry with Gemveto and Van Cleef and Arpels, Tai worked as a full-time designer in the fashion industry, with firms such as Trifari and Monet, and also consulted for Liz Claiborne, among other fashion houses.
She has won numerous industry awards for her own jewelry designs, including the 2007 Niche Awards, an award for work of "exceptional merit" from The Enamelist Society in 2005 and the prestigious Diamonds Today Award in 1995.
Tai has also taught courses at the American University, Parson's School of Design, the Pratt Institute and the Revere Academy. She currently teaches jewelry design and rendering at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Pratt Institute.
For more information about Tai, visit her Web site, Leilataidesign.com.

April's Birthstone: Diamond
....my birthstone and namesake....Diamondgirl!
April's birthstone is remarkably simple in composition, yet stunning in its unique ability to reflect and refract light into vivid flashes of brilliant color. The ancient Hindus called the Diamond "Vajra," meaning lightening, both because of the sparks of light thrown off by this gem as well as its invincible strength. The Diamond is harder than any other substance on earth.Diamonds have been revered throughout history. Used to embellish such items as crowns, swords and emblems as well as jewelry, they've even been part of national holidays. Queen Victoria declared the celebration of her 50th year of reign a "Diamond Jubilee." Diamonds have also been credited for having certain medicinal properties. During the middle ages, these gemstones were thought to heal illness, but only if the ailing person took the Diamond into bed to warm it up first!
Formed deep within the earth where there is intense heat and pressure, Diamonds are simply crystallized carbon. Volcanic activity of centuries ago brought these gemstones to the earth's surface, where they are found either within volcanic rock formations or washed out into rivers. India is thought to be the first river-bed source of Diamond mining, but today these gemstones are found primarily in Australia, the Soviet Union, and Africa.
No more notable it its uncut state than a plain pebble upon the beach, the true beauty of the Diamond was not revealed until the 16th century, when gemstone cutting and polishing techniques were perfected. Prior to this time, it was considered taboo to modify the original state of a Diamond. Today, the value and appeal of this stone depends largely upon how skillfully it is cut and faceted.
A gift of a Diamond is symbolic of everlasting love. There is no more convincing a promise of an enduring relationship than the brilliant gemstone that has endured in people's hearts throughout the ages.
Amethyst is always a winner!
Online Shopping Is Not A Fad
....dateline...Reston, VA......Dec. 30, 2007
Online retail sales between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which represents the core of the holiday shopping season, totaled $17.9 billion, a 21 percent increase over the same period of 2006, comScore, Inc. reports. For the entire 2007 holidays season to date (Nov. 1 - Dec. 27), $28 billion has been spent online, a 19-percent gain year-over-year, according to the Reston, Va.-based company, which measures digital data. While it is strong gain, it was far below the 26 percent growth rate recorded in 2006.
"Warm weather during the early part of November took its toll on online retail sales and played a role in holding down the growth in spending over the entire holiday season," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "However, if we look at the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we see online spending growing at a healthier 21-percent rate, which I think is encouraging given the economic challenges facing consumers this year as a result of higher gas prices, lower home values, and a jittery stock market."
Fulgoni noted that consumers are still shopping online in force after Christmas.
"Even as the holiday shopping season winds down after Christmas, we continue to see some relatively strong online spending days," Fulgoni said. "For example, the day after Christmas saw online sales of $545 million, more than double the sales on the same day last year. This would appear to indicate that consumers were willing and able to take advantage of the attractive late-season promotions and price discounts offered by retailers this year."
ComScore figures exclude travel, auctions, and large corporate purchases.
