What is Scientology?
An excerpt from a 1950's encyclopedia...
A new theory of abnormal psychology, for the application of which startlingly good results are claimed, is that due to an American L. R. Hubbard, and named dianetics. The conception which is most fundamental to his theory is his division of the mind in two parts, originally terms the "analytical" mind and the "reactive" mind.
The analytical mind performs the coherent mental functions, such as memory and reasoning. Teleologically speaking, the purpose of the reactive mind is to "short-circuit" the analytical mind when the organism is in danger.

Who is Xenu?
In Scientology doctrine, Xenu (also Xemu), was the intergalactic warlord dictator of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of aliens to Earth in DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living, and continue to wreak chaos and havoc today.
These events are known to Scientologists as "Incident II", and the traumatic memories associated with them as The Wall of Fire or the R6 implant. The story of Xenu is part of Scientology beliefs in extraterrestrial civilizations and alien interventions in Earthly events, collectively described as space opera by L. Ron Hubbard, science fiction writer and founder of Scientology.
Hubbard detailed the story in Operating Thetan level III (OT III) in 1967, warning that R6 was "calculated to kill (by pneumonia etc) anyone who attempts to solve it." The Xenu story was the start of the use of the volcano as a common symbol of Scientology and Dianetics from 1968 to the present day.
Criticism of the Church of Scientology often includes details of the Xenu story. The Church has tried to keep Xenu confidential; critics say that revealing the story is in the public interest, given the high prices charged for OT III, part of Scientology's secret "Advanced Technology" doctrines taught only to members who have already contributed large amounts of money to the organization.
The Church avoids making mention of Xenu in public statements and has gone to considerable effort to maintain the story's confidentiality, including legal action on the grounds of both copyright and trade secrecy. Despite this, much material on Xenu has leaked to the public, largely via the internet.

The purpose of this lens...
I'm not going to take sides. I'm giving you some information from both FOR and AGAINST. Sure, I have my own opinion, but I won't be including it here. Read what's here, click on the links, and decide for yourself.
According to the Church of Scientology...
The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" meaning "study of."
Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these:
Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized - and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability.
In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.
Through Scientology, people all over the world are achieving the long-sought goal of true spiritual release and freedom.

What is Dianetics?
Dianetics comes from the Greek words dia (through) and nous (soul). Dianetics could be said to be what the soul is doing to the body. It provides answers to the fundamental riddles of the mind with a thoroughly validated method that increases sanity, intelligence, confidence and well-being. It gets rid of the unwanted sensations, unpleasant emotions and psychosomatic ills that block one's life and happiness. Dianetics rests on basic principles that can be easily learned and applied by any reasonably intelligent person-as millions have. It is the route to a well, happy, high IQ human being.
Dianetics addresses the part of the mind that operates below the conscious level, exerting a hidden influence that causes you to react irrationally, say and do things that "aren't you," and have inexplicable emotions and ills that hold back intelligence and ability. It all resolves with Dianetics.

What's Wrong with Scientology?
Lying to people to get their money isn't just unethical -it's illegal. It's called fraud.
Scientology claims there is a scientific basis for all their processes. There isn't. Scientology claims it's compatible with other belief systems, like Christianity. It's not. Scientology claims to be the fastest-growing religion in the world, with 8 million members, utilizing infallible technology developed by a physicist and war hero. They're lying.

- Pretty interesting subject. I never read anything written by Hubbard, but I hope this summer this will change. As a great fan of SF I must put him on the list. Thanks for reminding me.

- I believe that there are different things that work for different people. We all need to coexsist and realize that if the core belief of being kind to people is the central theme then why judge...the world would be happier place.
