How to Diaper a Baby

Let's face it: you spend a LOT of time diapering your new baby and your toddler, so why not do it with a smile on your face. (And not gagging like all those home videos we've seen!)

First of all, you can smile once you know that you're diapering your baby properly and disposing of the "evidence" in a healthy manner. These steps are as recommended by Global Healthy Childcare. (Free Poster for diapering and other child health concerns available free at www.globalhealthychildcare.org)

Secondly, here is a collection of funny baby t-shirts for your baby girl or baby boy as well as funny t-shirts for the diaper changer to wear to put a positive spin on a necessary but dirty work. These tees make fun baby shower gifts for the new baby or the mother-to-be or the father-to-be.

Step #1: Keep Your Supplies Ready

Babies should never be left unattended, so make sure you have all your diapering supples available within reach. Even a newborn baby can roll, so never leave your baby's side. It is best to have an area designated for diapering, whether you prefer to use a change table or a dresser or other surface with a change pad and supplies at the ready.

Supplies that you should have within reach:

1) Diapers & Diaper fasteners if using cloth. (Keep pins in a bar of soap to make them go thru cloth easier.)

2) Wipes or a container of warm water with cotton balls or washcloth.

3) Diaper rash ointment or petroleum jelly.

Step #2: Keep the Diapering Surface Clean

Global Healthy Childcare and the AMA recommend that you keep the change pad clean from one change to the next by using non-porous paper change pad covers.

Step #3: Keep One Hand On Child at All Times

If your change table has a safety belt use it, but make sure you have one hand on your baby at all times. If your child squirms a lot during diapering, try singing to them or distracting them with toys or a mobile overhead.

Step #4: Dispose of Diaper in Sanitary Manner

Fold up disposable diaper into a ball and fasten adhesive tape. If at home, dispose of diaper in container lined with plastic bag. Remove garbage at least once a day to prevent odors and bacteria growth. If away from home, put diaper in ziploc bag before disposing as a courtesy to others for the same reasons.

If using cloth diapers, wet diaper can be put directly into the diaper pail, but soiled diapers must be emptied into the toilet first and rinsed if necessary before being deposited in diaper pail. There are biodegradeable diaper liners available to make this step easier - just pull out the liner and contents and flush. To get rid of odors you may also spray the diaper with water and baking soda.

Step #5: Clean Baby's Bottom

Use commercial wipes or a container of warm water with cotton balls or a warm washcloth to clean baby's bottom. Always wipe from front to back, especially for little girls so they won't get a urinary tract infection from the spreading of bacteria from the rectum. Lift the baby by the ankles if necessary to reach underneath, and check creases in the legs and thigh to ensure that all areas are clean. Use commercial wipes and cotton balls for only one swipe from front to back, and use another clean wipe for each additional swipe. If using a washcloth, fold the cloth to use a clean side for each swipe.

If cleaning a baby boy, keep clean diaper, receiving blanket or other cloth over his penis as boys get the urge to urinate when exposed to the air. He can have a range farther than you expect, and you, the walls and anything close by can be "christened". (There is a new product on the market called the Peepee Teepee which is a cloth cone that you place over his penis while diapering for just this purpose.)

Step #6: Diaper and Dress the Child

Open the diaper and slide the tape side under your child while lifting them by the ankles. If your baby has a diaper rash, use a zinc oxide ointment for healing or a petroleum jelly as a moisture barrier on the skin affected. (Just be sure that you don't touch the fasteners on disposable diapers with ointment on your fingers because they will not fasten.) Fasten diaper and dress baby.

If you have a newborn with an umbilical cord, fold the diaper down or use specialty newborn disposable diapers to ensure that the navel area is kept dry.

If you have a baby boy, place his penis pointing downward to keep from having leaks above the waistline.

If disposable diapers are leaving a mark around the legs and waist, the diaper has been put on too tightly or perhaps its time for a larger size.

Step #7: Wash Child's Hands & Put Them in a Safe Area

Wash your hands and your child's hands. Babies and toddlers quite often touch a soiled diaper or clothing or get their hands in the way while diapering. Wash their hands with soap and water to get rid of germs and then place them in their crib or playpen to be safe while you clean up the diaper changing area.

Step #8: Put Soiled Clothes in Hamper

Rinse soiled clothes if necessary. Put dirty baby clothing in hamper or container lined with plastic bag. Always launder baby clothes with hypoallergenic laundry soap or detergent recommended for infant clothing. Never use fabric softener or antistatic dryer sheets as they can cause an allergic reaction in babies.

Step #9: Sanitize Diapering Area

Remove disposable change pad cover. Clean area with disinfectant spray to remove bacteria and germs. Put fresh disposable pad cover on for next time.

Step #10: Wash Your Hands

It is very important that you wash your hands once you are finished. You want to remove any chemicals from the disinfectant spray or germs from diapering that may be on your skin for the benefit of your baby and yourself. Use soap and warm water and be sure to wash between the fingers. Rinse well and dry hands.
