Step #1: Keep Your Supplies Ready
Supplies that you should have within reach:
1) Diapers & Diaper fasteners if using cloth. (Keep pins in a bar of soap to make them go thru cloth easier.)
2) Wipes or a container of warm water with cotton balls or washcloth.
3) Diaper rash ointment or petroleum jelly.
Step #2: Keep the Diapering Surface Clean
Step #3: Keep One Hand On Child at All Times
Step #4: Dispose of Diaper in Sanitary Manner
If using cloth diapers, wet diaper can be put directly into the diaper pail, but soiled diapers must be emptied into the toilet first and rinsed if necessary before being deposited in diaper pail. There are biodegradeable diaper liners available to make this step easier - just pull out the liner and contents and flush. To get rid of odors you may also spray the diaper with water and baking soda.
Step #5: Clean Baby's Bottom
If cleaning a baby boy, keep clean diaper, receiving blanket or other cloth over his penis as boys get the urge to urinate when exposed to the air. He can have a range farther than you expect, and you, the walls and anything close by can be "christened". (There is a new product on the market called the Peepee Teepee which is a cloth cone that you place over his penis while diapering for just this purpose.)
Step #6: Diaper and Dress the Child
If you have a newborn with an umbilical cord, fold the diaper down or use specialty newborn disposable diapers to ensure that the navel area is kept dry.
If you have a baby boy, place his penis pointing downward to keep from having leaks above the waistline.
If disposable diapers are leaving a mark around the legs and waist, the diaper has been put on too tightly or perhaps its time for a larger size.
Step #7: Wash Child's Hands & Put Them in a Safe Area
Step #8: Put Soiled Clothes in Hamper
Step #9: Sanitize Diapering Area
Step #10: Wash Your Hands
