Four Reasons Why Cloth Diapers Still Rule
Back in the 60's and 70's, cloth diapers were what everyone used, while disposables were considered a luxury item.Today, disposables are what most parents use, and people using cloth diapers for their babies are considered to be "greenies".
However, once you look a bit deeper you will find that cloth diapers do have many advantages over disposables.
(1) Price
Let's take a look at a subject that is on everyone's mind - money! Using cloth diapers can help your family save money.
Even if you decide to use a diaper service, you should be able to save money. Right now many diaper services know that they are in competition with disposables so you may find that their prices have remained pretty low despite having their costs being raised.
In one price comparison that was done comparing newborn diapers - disposable disposables averaged $3.95 per day and using a a diaper service was $2.91 per day. Prices, of course go up and down all the time but if you always thought that a service was too expensive then you might want to take a second look.
If you wash your own diapers, you can spend even less.
(2) Changes in Cloth Diapers Over The Years
While the cloth diapers that our parents or grand parents once used were --lets just say -hard to manage, cloth diapers of today are much easier.
They are fitted better and you will find that they are pre-cut and pre-shaped to fit your baby better. You no longer have to fold them either, saving you a lot of time.
Remember the old jokes and movies about parents sticking themselves with pins? Well most cloth diapers now use velcro or snaps instead of pins.
You have probably also heard about smelly pails full of diapers waiting to be washed - you may even remember them from years past.
Well many of today's diaper services provide a flushable, biodegradable, yet comfortable paper lining that holds the solid waste, allowing it to be easily disposed of in the toilet.
Even if you don't want to use a service and wash the diapers yourself, you can still purchase these liners online or at your local store.
(3) Health
Although disposable diapers have changed over the years and are more breathable and keep moisture away from your baby, using cloth diapers you'll find that you baby will have less issues with diaper rash.
(4) Environmental Concerns
Although disposable diapers have some a long way, they are still not as environmentally friendly as they can be.
It has been estimated that over 10,000 tons of disposable diapers are added to landfills EACH DAY.
Now add to this how many you have probably seen littering parking lots, filling up garbage cans at parks and in mall bathrooms, you can see how big the problems really is.
Sure disposables are quick and easy to use, but you do have to think about future generations.
With more more and more people in the world and more countries using disposables you can see how big an issue this can be.
Maybe you don't want to go through the fuss and time it takes to use cloth diapers try using cloth diapers when your at home and disposable only when you are away from home.
By just cutting back on disposable diapers 50% of the time, you can make a major impact on the environment and on your wallet.
When my son was a baby I did just that. I used cloth diapers most of the time (and didn't use a service but washed by own) but when we were out and didn't want to pack around a soggy and wet diaper to take back home i would use disposables.
Sure it wasn't the absolute 100% environmentally way to go - but I made a compromise that I could live with.
Our son also never once had diaper rash even though we lived in a very warm weather climate so I felt very good about that.
