Diaper Cake Instructions

I suggest deciding a theme for your diaper cake first, and let that influence the "ingredients" that you buy.

* 40 - 50 small diapers (you could use different sizes, but i like newborn ones)
* 1 cake plate - plastic or one cut out of cardboard approx 16 inches.
* 1 baby bottle - (can be filled with smaller baby items like diaper pins, etc)
* Small baby items of your choice - rattles, teethers, baby combs, clippers, rattles, pacifiers, bibs, towels, etc)
* Rubber bands - (approximately 50)
* Colored ribbon (this should match your theme)
* Cake Topper - (a nice stuffed animal, or another keepsake item)

You will create 3 layers or tiers for this cake. For the first layer take about 20 diapers and roll them up, secure each one with a rubber band. I join them in groups of 5 and then secure those 4 sets of 5 rolled diapers with ribbon. This makes the base layer and should be placed directly onto the base plate.

For the next tier, take 15 diapers and do the same thing - rolling each one and securing it with a rubber band, grouping them into 3 groups of 5 rolled diapers. Secure all 3 groups of 5 with ribbon, secure as tight as possible. This layer will go on top of the base layer.

For your final tier, take 5 diapers, rolled and secured by one rubber band. Place this one on top of the other two layers. Now there are ways to secure the layers in place on top of each other - but I don't do that. I like to be able to assemble them on sight. You could just use wooden dowels and run them through each layer and then also wrap the entire diaper cake in cellophane.

You then attach the baby bottle, other items to the ribbon. Finish off by adding the stuffed animal or baby keepsake to the top of the cake.
