Bartholomew Diaz
Bartholomew Diaz (Bartolomeu Dias) (died 1500) was a Portuguese navigator who was the first European to sail around the Cape of Good Hope (1486-88) in the far south of Africa.
This achievement opened up a sea and trading route from Europe to India and the rest of Asia. Sailing via the Cape of Good Hope was a much faster route than the long overland journeys to the East that had been used until then.

In 1488 Bartholemew Diaz was the first to sail round the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa. He named it the "Cape of Storms" (Cabo das Tormentas).
This cape was later renamed "Cape of Good Hope" (Cabo da Boa Esperança) by King John II of Portugal, due to great optimism caused by the opening of a sea route from Europe to India and the East.
