Dick Francis - Jockey, Author, Englishman
Ranked #7,762 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #276,002 overall
Dick Francis, an author for all seasons!
I have all his books and have read them multiple times. They are an easy read, entertaining and fun. The mystery isn't too confusing or mind boggling, so you aren't scratching your head trying to figure it out. In fact, most times you are right with the main character, wondering just what is going on!
The characters are complex and interesting, each one having their own voice. There's comedy, romance, mystery and a slice of English life in each book.
I recommend reading them all! There are a lot, even though he died last year, his son Felix is carrying on Dick's work. Dick wrote a novel a year for 38 years and every one of them was a winner.
Not every story revolves around a jockey, many of them center on someone within the racing community or someone employed there. As he grew older and experienced more than racing, Dick Francis even had some books that had nothing to do with racing whatsoever.
A fun way to pass some time and you'll come away from each one entertained and relaxed. Promise!

Sid Halley Series
by Dick Francis
Sid Halley Omnibus
Amazon Price: $1.91 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
Used Price: $1.91
All of Dick Francis's characters are compelling and complex. He chose to write more than one book about two of them, Sid Halley and Kit Fielding.
Sid was a jockey who tragically suffered an accident that ended his career. How he picked up his life from the shattered ruins, continued on with a new career, how that was received by his friends, who remained his friend after he was no longer 'famous'... all add to the depth of the character in these four books.
The omnibus contains all four of the Sid Halley stories; Odds Against, Whip Hand, Come to Grief, and Under Orders. Follow Sid's life as he grows and changes and adapts to his new world. You won't regret it!
Kit Fielding Series
Kit Fielding Omnibus
Amazon Price: $51.72 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
Used Price: $0.99
Kit is one of my favorite characters. Christmas Fielding is a jockey and his family is all about horses. Unlike most of the characters in Dick Francis's books, Kit's family is alive and well and passable functional... for the most part.
He has a beloved employer and an even more beloved twin sister who manage between them to keep him hopping, on and off the race track.
This omnibus contains both Kit Fielding books, Break In and Bolt. Both are entertaining and a must read!
What do you think?
Authors like Dick Francis who writes about jockeys and horse racing, or John Grisham who writes about lawyers and trials, have experience in the field they are writing about. They know the life.

- I've read both the Kit Fielding books, and Whip Hand as well, but have not read any of the books written after Dick Francis' wife died (I understand she used to collaborate with him, and did most of the writing, while he came up with the characters, plot and research, and the books weren't the same after she died).

- I thought the books might change after his son started writing with him, but they are still good. I think the worst one is Second Wind, I just didn't like it for some reason. I hadn't heard that about his wife, but I haven't really noticed that much of a change in his writing either.
