Half of the Dynamic Duo, Robin
In the comic books, Dick Grayson was better known as Robin, Batman's faithful sidekick until Dick grew up and became independent, then he went off on his own and became Nightwing. After Dick retired from being Robin, Jason Todd became the new Robin until he was murdered by The Joker. The next Robin was Tim Drake, once he retired the fourth Robin was a girl. Stephanie Brown until Batman decided to fake her death, then Tim Drake returned to his role as Robin. But in all the tv series and the movies Dick Grayson was the only one to play Robin, so far. So in this lens we'll have a look at who's played Dick Grayson in the tv shows and the movies, the original Robin (Boy Wonder). The first half of the Dynamic Duo called Batman and Robin.
Like Batman, Dick Grayson will always be a work in progress, so check back from time to time to see what might be different or if the Nightwing is off to save the world.

Dick Grayson before he was Robin
and the Flying Graysons

Richard John "Dick" Grayson is a fictional superhero that appears in comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and illustrator Jerry Robinson, he first appeared as Robin in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940.
The youngest in a family of acrobats known as the "Flying Graysons," Dick watched a mafia boss kill his parents in order to extort money from the circus that emp...
Grayson
This movie is a fan film made by John Fiorella starring John Fiorella as Dick Grayson too. This is simply a trailor of a non-existent movie called Grayson based on The Boy Wonder, Dick Grayson. However, it was never supported by Warner Bros which is why it's only a trailer and not made into a movie. Fiorella was looking to make a demo that would make people sit up and take notice, leaving them wanting more and we ended up with this 5 minute trailer that actually looks like it might be a decent movie. So if you want to read the screenplay that Fiorella wrote for this movie, feel free to head over to Untamed Cinema and you can read the screenplay for Grayson

The First Dick Grayson
Douglas Croft b. August 12, 1926 - d. October 24, 1963

Douglas Croft was the youngest actor to ever play Dick Grayson/Robin. At 16, which was closest to the age that Robin actually was suppose to be, he got the role of Batman's sidekick, The Boy Wonder. During his short life, Croft played many of the younger characters of some big name stars such as James Cagney in "Yankee Doodle Dandy," Gary Cooper in "The Pride of the Yankees," and Ronald Reagan in "King's Row." Not much is really known about this actor after his last role in Killer McCoy in 1947. Croft was only 38 when he died.
The Second Dick Grayson/Robin/Boy Wonder
Johnny Duncan b. December 7, 1922

Johnny Duncan was the second Dick Grayson/Robin. Altho Duncan played in a lot of other movies, they were only small parts where he didn't get credited for them. Prior to being half of the Dynamic Duo, Duncan learned at a young age how to tap dance. When he was 9 years old, during the depression, Duncan use to tap dance in a local bar called The Sugar Bowl Bar unknown by his parents. The people use to throw change at his feet for the entertainment. When his parents were having financial problems and almost lost their farm, Duncan gave them all the money he made while doing this which helped them keep their farm. From 1933 - 1938 Duncan and his girlfriend Lou were doing Vaudeville shows at the Tower Theater in Kansas City which is where he was spotted by a 20th Century scout. Being only 15 at the time, the scout spoke with Duncan and his parents and signed Duncan up to a 6 month contract with 20th Century Fox. Duncan played as part of the juveniles in East Side Kids, later to become The Bowery Boys. In 1949, Duncan became the second Robin for a 15 episode series.
The Third and Most Popular Robin
Burt Ward b. July 6, 1945

Who knew that the boy penned as "the youngest professional skater" at the age of 2 would grow up to be The Boy Wonder, half of the Dynamic Duo. Burt's father owned a popular traveling ice show called Rhapsody on Ice and at the age of 2 Burt was one of the performers. Burt was very athletic in school participating in track and field, gold and golf then by the time he was 15, he started to study karate. When he was 20, he auditioned for the role of Robin, his very first tv role and in 1966 he got the role of Robin, The Boy Wonder. So from 1966 - 1968, Burt Ward (as he was going by in the movies) played the faithful sidekick of Batman, Robin. Once the show was cancelled, like Adam West, Burt was also stereotyped in the role of Dick Graysonand was unable to find work in any other movie. So in 1977 - '78 he did the voice of Robin in the animated version of The New Adventures of Batman and then again in '78 and '79 Tarzan and the Super 7 and Legends of the Superheroes. Since his run as Robin ended in '79, Burt Ward's only been able to get minimal roles in low budget movies which hasn't amounted to much.
Burt's been married 4 times and has 2 daughters. His first wife was Bonny Lindsey who he had his first child, Lisa, with in 1966, the same year he started as Robin.
His second wife was actress/model Kathy Kersh in' 67. His third wife in '85 was model Mariana Daniela Torchia and his fourth and present wife since 1990 is heiress Tracy Posner who had his second daughter Melody in '91. These days Ward runs Logical Figments, a special effects contractor that provides graphics and animation for commercials and occasional feature films and along with wife Tracy, they also run Great Dane Adoptions and Rescue . Ward also has since written his own autobiography by the name of Boy Wonder: My Life in Tights
A book which Adam West claims is wildly exaggerated.
The Only Robin to Star in the Batman Movies
Chris O'Donnell b. June 26, 1970

Chris O'Donnell started doing modeling and commercials at the age of 13. He was discovered while he was in a MacDonald's commercial serving Michael Jordan. Right from the start O'Donnell was in some top notch movies. His first major role was in 1990 along side Jessica Lange in Men Don't Leave, an excellent movie in my own opinion. Then in Fried Green Tomatoes with Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates in 1991, Scent of a Woman, 1992, along with Al Pacino and The Three Musketeers in '93 with Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Oliver Platt. As well as Circle of Friends and Mad Love both in '95. Also in 1995, O'Donnell won the role Robin in Batman Forever beating out future Batman himself Christian Bale. Val Kilmer was Batman in '95. He also returned in '97 to do Robin again along side George Clooney in Batman and Robin. Since O'Donnell's run as The Boy Wonder, he's appeared in several tv series in recurring roles such as The Practice, 2 and a Half Men, Head Cases and Grey's Anatomy.
In 1997, O'Donnell married Caroline Fentress and together they have 5 children. Lily Anne O'Donnell (b. September 1999), Christopher Eugene O'Donnell Jr (b. October 24, 2000), Charles McHugh O'Donnell (b. July 11, 2003), Finley O'Donnell (b. March 24, 2006), and Maeve Frances O'Donnell (b. December 10, 2007). We'll have to stay tuned to Chris O'Donnell to see what he has in store for the future.

Hi Molly,
Great lens on Dick Grayson aka..Robin the Boy Wonder! You've got some great info. I only remember Burt Ward playing Robin. Batman and Robin was one of my favorite shows growing up in the early 70's. I am still trying to get my hands on a Robin action figure from Mego.
DC Universe Infinite Heroes Wave 4 has Nightwing in it, and I actually have a couple of them up for auction on ebay right now.You should check out my lens "For the Love of Action Figures."
