The Conundrum of the Mystery: Do We Or Don't We Want to Know?

My mother was very good at figuring out mysteries from Perry Mason to Agatha Christie. It was a point of pride with her. I think sometimes she told the rest of us, which was a point of annoyance for us. I don't know which was worse, being told the ending or being told that someone knows the ending and you don't!

I am a smart person, perceptive too. I am a therapist, after all, adept at assessing people. But I usually don't figure out mysteries or thrillers. Even in the Columbo/Monk type mysteries where we see the crime and the mystery is seeing how it will be solved, I am not so good.

I wonder if sometimes its because I don't want to know.

Spoiler alert. If you haven't seen these movies, you may get the answer (or not) by reading this lens, so give it a thumbs up, skip to the comments and tell me that you didn't read it! Get the DVD, and come back! Or just keep reading. But I warned you!

You Bet! That Is Most of the Fun...I'll Tell You Why.

DecoratingforEvents says:

I like to put all the clues together to make an educated guess. i love it when i am right, but being wrong and surprised can be fun too!

mbgphoto says:

I like to try to guess..but I wouldn't want someone to tell me.

Need to know what I'm watching before I watch it -:)

Momsbusy247 says:

Yes, but it took a while.

Kimbesa says:

Yes, I want to know what happens. There's plenty of mystery left in how they pull it off...

No Way! I Just Want to Watch the Movie!

JoanneOtt says:

I love a surprise ending. Sometimes I can figure it out, but often not.

KimGiancaterino says:

I like to let the mystery unfold. It's always fun to be surprised by an ending, and it doesn't happen often.

BevsPaper says:

I think it is much more fun to find out at the end. Sometimes I pick up on the obvious clues but I'm a gal who likes to be surprised.

sousababy says:

Oh, I love to be surprised. When things get "too predictable" I feel like leaving before the movie is over. I know, not very patient of me.

I'm not a spoiler, but people say i'm like my grandmother.

THE SIXTH SENSE

The 6th Sense

I would bet that by now everyone who would ever care already know about The 6th Sense. The clues were so obvious we should have all known while we were watching it. But I didn't. I didn't get it until Bruce Willis, and maybe a little after that. When they reviewed the clues at the end I hit my head with my hand and said, "Of course! Why didn't I see that?" But I didn't. Heck, when I watch the movie now, I could be fooled again.

I mean the movie was about a boy who saw dead people and it started with the Doc getting shot! But I didn't get it.

Loved the movie, BTW, If you haven't seen it, do.

This is an engrossing movie and one I have seen many times, so I would say that you could enjoy it, even if you know the ending.

THE OTHERS

The Others

A war widow is raising two children with xeroderma pigmentosum which means that they can have no exposure to the sun. After unsuccessfully trying to hire servants to replace the ones who suddenly left, a couple and their mute daughter show up to apply for the job.

The first part of the movie seems merely depressing, as it would be with years of no sun, but things begin to change in a way that startled Nicole Kidman, the mother. By the end of the movie everything is literally the opposite of what it was supposed to be.

I didn't get this one either, even during the seance, although it came to me shortly after. But BTW then the movie was almost over!

Interesting movie that gets people to think about perceptions. Do we ever really know for sure that things are as they seem?

What Do You Know About the Others?

This is a definite spoiler alert. Read this and you will no more about the movie than you might want, but you will still enjoy it!

SHUTTER ISLAND

Shutter Island

A federal agent and his partner are taken to a gloomy island that houses Massachusetts' criminally insane. One of the inmates, a woman who killed her children, has escaped and they are there to discover what happened and hopefully find her.

Leonardo di Caprio is all business and not very interested in the doctors; theories about trying to help the inmates. In fact, he suspects that they are up to no good. There are various warnings from inmate who are acting even more strangely than one would expect. Then a terrible storm hits the island and the electricity and all safety precautions are knocked out. The agent flees into the caves to save himself. And then things are really turned on their heads.

Hey! I got this one about 2/3 of the way through. I kept my mouth shut, of course, but I still loved the movie. Figuring it out didn't stop that, but it did make be pull for the character more!

So What Do You Think? About Knowing or About These Movies?

I enjoy these types of movies.

Great idea for a lens. You have chosen excellent films for your quizzes. I try not to work out the twist or who done it, because it can reduce the enjoyment of the movie. I like to be surprised.
  • skiesgreen Jan 10, 2011 @ 6:57 pm | delete
I don't know the movie at all and rarely watch TV these days so I could not take part. But your quizzes are excellent. Top marks and thanks for visiting and rating my lenses as well as for you lovely comments - much appreciated Margo.

I like to watch these types of movies several times, especially if I don't guess the ending. "The Sixth Sense" surprised me, but when I watch it now I can't believe I was fooled! The answer is so obvious, and my sister guessed it from the start.
  • BevsPaper Jan 2, 2011 @ 7:49 am | delete
Funny thing when I watch these kinds of movies...I rarely have it figured out until the end and then I'm surprised that I didn't figure it out earlier. I really do enjoy movies that have twists and turns that keep you guessing. I may be like you...I really don't want to know until the end.
