TOP 6 SCRAPBOOK DIE CUTTING MACHINES & DIES
Ranked #245 in Arts & Design, #2,469 overall
What kind of Scrapbooking Die Cutting Machine or Die Cuts do you prefer?
Scrapbook Dies is a GREAT lens provided to bring all scrapbook die-cutting companies to one location online, so you as the consumer don't have to be bouncing back and forth to everyone's page. Die-Cuts has been dedicated to all those scrapbookers, paper crafters, die-cutters, card makers, or whatever you want to call yourselves out there! Whether you are a novice and/or beginner or running die-cuts through your machine all day long, this website die-cuts will give you some valuable information about the different dies, die-cutting and embossing machines, that are out there on the market and which one would be best suited for you.
There are many different styles of machines and not all are created equal by any means. Most are universal die-cut machines, but obviously cut and emboss their own dies the best. Some die cutting machines have a rolling mechanism and others have a pull down mechanism. And if you don't want to do that there are now electronic die-cutting machines, where all you do is push a button and watch the machine cut it for you. This has served great for the older ladies that have arthritis in the wrists or hands and want to keep scrapbooking for the grand children. Some universal die-cutting systems are portable and some are table top. Some are big and bulky and cut the 12 inch border dies and others are smaller if you are only into card making. Basically it comes down to personal preference and in the end what will work for you.
Some questions to consider what kind of die-cutter you are or want to be would be the following:
-Will you be going over to a friends house frequently for scrapbook parties or staying at home mostly?
-Do you have a craft room dedicated for scrapbooking?
-Will you be scrapbooking 12x12 paper and making memory scrapbooks?
-Will you be making decorative cards?
-Will you be cutting other materials other than paper with your die-cut machine such as cork, vellum, felt, chip board, magnet, certain types of metal?
-Would you rather have a computer die-cutting system so you don't use your hands other than pointing, clicking, and printing?
Hopefully these questions give you some direction about when researching and purchasing a new die-cutting and embossing system or replacing an old one. Feel free to browse my squidoo page and read about the different scrapbook die-cutting companies and choose for yourself. Thanks for visiting my Squidoo page, "Die-Cuts". So if you are not ready to move into the digital revolution quite yet, there are many good scrapbooking die-cut systems available for you to use and affordable too. What Are Cutting & Embossing Dies
A brief overview of Scrapbooking Die Cuts
Die cuts are shapes used to decorate your scrapbook layouts. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes for your scrapbook needs. The sizes are usually 1 inch to 4 inches in 1/2 inch increments, but this can vary from each supplier. Quickutz tends to provide a wide range of 2x2 inch dies, whereas Spellbinders Paper Arts sells a bit larger die cuts. The great thing about dies is that they can be reused again and again, making them more economical than consumables such as stickers or rub-ons. Die-cuts are an easy way to make your pages standout and look fabulous and are extremely versatile in paper crafting.

All Spellbinders die-cuts have a triple function, which allow you to Cut, Emboss, and Stencil. This is great deal for those crafters and scrapbookers that live outside the U.S. and don't want to be affected by shipping costs so much.Spellbinders Nestabilities die-cuts make it so you are not spending any more money on die-cut punches! Spellbinders were the first to release nesting dies or nesting diecuts and of course every other die-cutting company has followed. Spellbinders provides over 60 different kinds of nesting die-cuts from nesting circles to nesting squares, nesting ovals and mega nesting shapes! The possiblities are endless! All the nestability dies are classified as either being Classic, Petite, or Mega. Although the Nestabilities are what Spellbinders is known for, they have other beautiful diecuts that they release a couple times a year. Stacy Caron, designer and owner for Spellbinders Paper Arts, lately has designed one of the coolest stamping/scrapbooking products out on the market and it's not taking too long to spread. So what is it? Spellbinders Impressabilities! These Impressabilities are customizable templates that can you can emboss with or deboss with. Yep you heard right, "deboss" too. Spellbinders Impressablities will emboss or deboss the front of an A2 card. These work amazing for all you card makers out there and are a dream come true to the card making world. And this is not all. I've hear that some scrapbookers out there are applying ink to these and debossing to make a nice letter press effect. So far these Impressabilities have four different kinds: Paisley, Flowers, Snowflake, & Butterfly. They can also be used for embellishments or simply a stencil. Impressabilities are priced at 6.99 retail, but with that coupon that you can get at Cut@Home it puts the price really cheap!

Quickutz
Quickutz Dies and Epic Six
QUICKUTZ scrapbooking dies are all about quality and design. At first Quickutz was known for there wide selection of die-cut alphabets, but have now really concentrated on providing new and innovative die-cut shapes for every type of person. Quickutz releases die cuts just about every month. So there is always something new and fresh. If you want to use a different Christmas tree diecut than last year you can bet Quickutz will come out with a selection of different ones each year! And this is the way they do it for all there shapes. Some customers even like to buy quickutz dies just for the collection. This way you can choose what diecut shapes you want to use on each card or scrapbooking page. Maybe you want to do some Valentines cards, but want to use a different heart die-cut for each card, then Quickutz is a great choice for dies. Now lets talk about the different die-cuts. Quickutz has probably one of the largest selections of different dies on the market and are priced around 4.99-12.99 for the 2x2 dies and 15.00-25.00 for the Revolution dies. Some of the dies or diecuts they offer are bugs, animals, cooking shapes, embellishments, tags, food, clothes, and much more! They also do have some die-cuts called, "Around the World" dies, which gives you all the dies from all the countries! These are very popular if your family loves to travel and need dies of different states in the U.S. or other countries for those scrapbook pages. Revolution diecut shapes also know as Quickutz grand shapes, are pretty much the same shapes as the 2x2's, but just bigger giving the crafter another option to do a larger layout. Quickutz cookie cutter dies are trimmed right to the edge of the die, which is a plus for not having to waste more paper. The cookie cutter dies come in monograms, (which are all the letters of the alphabet), nesting dies, die sets, and die-cut phrases. Also new to the Quickutz family of diecuts is the Quickutz Embossing Folders that come in 4x6 or 2x2 dies.
QUICKUTZ DIE-CUTTING MACHINES
Quickutz offers a couple different kinds of die-cutting machines to appeal to all types of people and affordability. There first machine that they offer is called the Quickutz Squeeze. Note: the Quickutz Squeeze will be discontinued soon and be replaced by the Quickutz epic six. This machine can be set up to use in your hand or on top of a table. However it only fits 2x2 diecuts. So if you going to use dies from other companies like Bosskut make sure they fit and are 2x2. You can also use there embossing dies called, "GooseBumpz". The Squeeze is a great diecut machine for the on-the-go scrapbooker or crafter because of its portability. The next die-cutting system that cuts the bigger dies and a bit easier to use since it has a roller is The Quickutz Revolution Table top Die Cutting Tool. Note: The Quickutz Revolution will be discontinued soon and be replaced by the Quickutz Epic Six Die-Cutting machine. See Below to ready about this Brand New machine! The Revolution can cut large 4 inch dies, 12 inch border dies and much more!
QUICKUTZ EPIC SIX DIE-CUTTING MACHINE
The Epic Six die-cutting tool is brand new machine made by Quickutz to replace their Squeeze and Revolution. The new Epic Six will cut and emboss ALL quickutz dies and other leading brand dies making this die-cutting machine the most univeral die-cutting tool that Quickutz has ever released. It's name comes from its large opening of being six inches wide to accomodate all your Revolution Grand Shapes diecuts. It is also very light weight and portable. I would say that the Epic Six is very similar in design to the Provocraft Cuttlebug. Although the main difference between the Provocraft Cuttlebug and the Quickutz Epic Six is the Epic was engineered to distribute the pressure more evenly on the cutting surface so you can get a more clean and even cut on your dies. This epic six is perfect for letterpress printing.
QUICKUTZ SILHOUETTE DIGITAL CUTTING TOOL (now sold by Silhouette America separately)
Now for the next die-cutting solution that silhouette America offers is there Silhouette digital cutting tool. This tool is a printer that connects to your computer and cuts paper, and other materials like adhesive vinyl with a blade that you design right from your home computer. The Silhouette comes with free fonts, unlimited downloads for a very affordable price, and an SD card reader built in to save your favorite die-cut designs.
So what's in right now and will be for awhile at Quickutz, it would have to be there die-cut adhesives. These are so cool! They have adhesive cork, adhesive metal, adhesive clear plastic, adhesive grey chipboard, adhesive magnet, adhesive vellum, adhesive white chipboard, and double-sided adhesive sheets. Check them all out. Some more popular items are there 4x8 diecut alphabets. Some of these include: Aquarius,Storybook, Rainbow Classic, Rollerskate, Dragonfly to just name a few.

Clearlits Dies
Clearlits die-cuts are dies that have a see-through plastic back with an essential shape so you as the papercrafter can see exactly what is being cut. These clearlit die-cuts make all your scrapbook photos come to life with being able to use amazing decorative accents, tags, ornaments, frames, and much more to cutting and cropping that photo. Clearlits come in different categories: Flowers, Shapes, Tags, and Miscellaneous Clearlits Dies. Like Sizzlits, the Clearlits Dies are designed to fit in all Sizzix die-cut machines, but some are compatible with roller machines only.
Embosslits Dies
Embosslits die-cuts basically are your die-cuts that take the die-cutting and embossing into one step. These can be used in all Sizzix machines, but some are compatible with roller machines only like Sizzlits and Clearlits. Embosslits include: Alphabet Sets, Flowers, Shapes, Tags, Animals, Phrases, Accents, and many more types of die-cuts.Simple Impression Embossing FoldersThese are similar to the provocraft cuttlebug embossing folders and are used for embossing gretting cards, stationery, gifts, decorations, and so much more to whatever the imagination can let you create. Embosslits have the same criteria as the other Sizzix die-cuts mentioned above for their machines.

These also fit the dimensions of an A2 card. Textured Impressions are to be used with the Bigkick and Bigshot only. Movers & Shapers Dies
Movers and Shapers die-cuts are magnetic dies that are movable and create a window on any card or envelope.
Differences Between the Big Three types of Nesting Dies
Scrapbooking dies can be a lot of fun to use in all sorts of crafting projects. They are easy to store, fun to collect and give endless possibilities to the scrapbookers imagination. Although there are many dies out there on the market, I will feature a certain type that has been a definite trend in the industry. This part of my squidoo lens will show you the differences between the Spellbinders Nestabilities,Quickutz Nesting Dies, and the Sizzix Framelits. All these mentioned, although similar in shape, are high quality products and each have a unique design.Spellbinders Nestabilities
Lets start off with the Spellbinders Nestabilities. These were the first of their kind to be released around 2007-08. They come six to seven in a package making storage a breeze. Around the outer edge of the diecut you will notice that it not only gives you the ability to cut, but also to emboss paper and stencil images with an inner edge. With use of a die cutting and embossing machine it will allow the crafter to emboss a card and cut with one pass through. The crisp clear embossed look on the paper is what makes the Spellbinders Nestabilities very popular among those who love card making and doing pages. How you can also tell the difference between a nestability and others is the color. They are coated in a copper color to distinguish them from the rest.
Quickutz Nesting Dies
The next one I will talk about is the Quickutz Nesting Dies. These are coated in a silver standard color as are all other metal wafter thin scrapbooking dies. There is no inner edge for embossing capabilities like Spellbinders, however it will cut beautifully and accurately. Since the diecut is thinner, Quickutz has put even more into a package ranging from four to twenty-two in a set! This is a great space saver as well and gives the designer more sizes to work with in projects.
Sizzix Framelits
The last type of die I will refer to are the Sizzix Framelits. These are the newest of the three mentioned here in the article. Being released in 2011 at the Craft & Hobby Association, the Framelits have become a winner for those who use the Big Shot die cutting and embossing machine. The cutting edge on these scrapbook die cuts is right up against the inner edge. This means that there is no way to emboss paper even a little bit with a framelit. The set comes with four to seven dies in a package. They resemble more closely to the Quickutz nesting dies than the Spellbinders nestabilities in color and design.
All nesting dies talked about here are metal wafer thin. They all have the capability to layer, make window cards and frames. They all can fit through the following die cutting machines: Spellbinders Grand Calibur, Quickutz Epic Six, Provo Craft Cuttlebug and the Sizzix Big Shot or Big Shot PRO. Many of these now coordinate with rubber stamps and have cross marketed with companies such as: JustRite Stampers,Hero Arts, and Heartfelt Creations. This has opened up a whole new world of designs, cards, scrapbook pages, and other craft projects with the combination of matching dies and rubber stamps. I hope this squidoo lens has helped you learn a little more about differences between these dies to further your scrapbooking experience!

Bosskut Dies and Gazelle
UPDATE: THIS IS NOT INCLUDED IN OUR LIST ANYMORE BECAUSE THERE HAS NOT BEEN MUCH SHOWN BY BOSSKUT TO ITS RETAILERS IN PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR THE GAZELLE AND THE DIE CUTTING MACHINE WAS DISCONTINUED IN 2010Although Bosskut has decided to go more towards promoting their Bosskut Gazelle and will be discontinuing the Bosskut Die-Cutting Machine, they will still be offering their wonderful die-cuts. And honestly how could they not? Bosskut diecuts have some of the finest die-cut designers.
Bosskut dies
All of Boss Kut's dies are wafer-thin, very similar to a Quickutz die. These dies are chemically-etched with amazing cutting precision and are priced at about 5.00 retail, which is why many Quickutz lovers have converted over to buying Bosskut dies. Some of these Boss Kut dies will work in other machines, depending on how intricate the die is. The most popular Bosskut collection of die-cuts would have to be the hearts and flowers. There is probably no other die-cutting company that offers so many varieties of different diecut flowers and hearts to choose from. They even have a diecut called, "design a flower", which lets you purchase one die and have up to four different options to create your own kind of die-cut flower each time you use it! Also recently in 2008 Bosskut released there die-cut peekers. These are die-cut animal shapes that have there paws up as if they are peeking and looking at someone. There are seven currently: Aligator, Bunny, Chick, Kitty, Lion, and a Monkey. But with as well as Bosskut has done selling these I'm sure they will come out with more soon. Boss Kut "Tags" are also very popular. They have quite a variety of different tags to choose from with the vintage tags being the best seller. And Bosskut in 2009 has now started offering 12 inch border dies. They only offer about 5 of them right now, but very cute designs.
Bosskut Gazelle COMPUTER CRAFT CUTTER
Okay now onto the Gazelle Computer Craft Cutter. As every die-cut company has kind of there "niche" product or something they want to push, it would have to be the Gazelle for Bosskut. By the many reviews the Bosskut Gazelle is receiving and the fact that they keep selling out it must be a winner! The Gazelle is priced at 529.00, but at lots of online stores it is priced down. In fact at www.cutathome.com it is on sale for 449.00. One of the major positives about it is, that it's compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista. According to those that have already bought the Gazelle Computer Craft Cutter, they say it has easy navigation through tool bars and can cut up to a width of 12 inches. It comes with 200 fonts already loaded and about 700 shapes giving a scrapbooker and papercrafter that likes to use the computer endless possibilities! It will cut cardstock and chipboard with no problem at all because it uses 500 grams of pressure. To watch a video of the Gazelle in action click here. Conclusion about Die Cutting
Although the electronic cutters sound fantastic, manual die cutters are still very popular and still have preference in todays' scrapbooking market. There is no need for the fancy electronic machines, when you can let those creative juices flow with a die cutting machine. These cutting and embossing machines are very simple to use, and much less hassle than tracing and cutting by hand and more creative than the click of a mouse. They are not only for the serious scrapbookers, but for all women who enjoy crafting. Die cuts and Die Cutting Machines are a solid investment and practical and has been a staple of crafting for a long time and will continue on for years to come.
