1964.5 Ford Mustang - 1:18 Scale

Ford had conducted a whirlwind media blitz prior to the April 17, 1964 unveiling, and it worked to perfection. Even though Ford Motor Company had produced 16,000 Mustangs in the six weeks prior to introduction, they were already 6,000 cars behind by the end of the first day of sales. One million cars were sold in the first two years alone! The sleek, economical design came with a price tag less than most people expected, and drew people's attention to the pony car genre which the Mustang helped create.

There was nothing Ford C.E.O. Lee Iococca liked better than a flashy mid-year introduction. Using the N.Y. Worlds Fair as a backdrop, Iacocca caught the automobile world off-guard and won the hearts of the American public on April 17, 1964 with the introduction of the Mustang. This long-hooded short-deck "pony car" almost immediately sold out its entire 100,000 production run. With its short 108" wheel base and 101 horsepower engine, it was a sport compact with youth appeal, costing about half of its rival Corvette. Our exclusive 1:32 scale precision die-cast replica, with the original galloping pony crest, will bring back the excitement we all felt over 40 years ago at the beginning of "Mustang Mania".

    1967 Shelby Mustang GT-500 - 1:32 Scale

    1967 Shelby Mustang GT-500 - 1:32 Scale

Ford loved the prestige of the Shelby Mustang but in 1967 decided they needed to make some money off this brand, which meant more sales. With the Mustang Fastback as a basis, Carroll Shelby used a fiberglass nose, louvered hood and side scoops to retain the sports car look. But at Ford's insistence he added air conditioning and power steering and brakes to make the car more accessible to the public. Under the hood, however, the GT-500 was now powered by a 428 cubic inch V-8 rated at 355hp. but actually producing more than 400. Top speed was 130mph. Sales increased over 25% with over 3200 Shelby Mustangs produced.

    1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 - 1:18 Scale

The Ford Mustang Boss 429s produced in 1969 and 1970 existed so that Ford could qualify 500 of its 429 engines for NASCAR racing. It had power to spare, but you could find most of that power at 6000 rpm and higher which didn't translate to the streets very well. It dominated the Dodge Hemi Daytonas in 1969 on the track, but had a more difficult rivalry with the 1970 Plymouth Superbirds.

It was the car that Americans said they wanted. In extensive Gallup polls conducted by Ford, people were asked what they desired in a car. Ford took the answers and made the Mustang. The response was phenomenal, and the 1964 Mustang created a buzz similar to the frenzy surrounding the Beatles! People just had to have this car, and not just adults-in the 1964 holiday season over 93,000 pedal powered Mustangs were snapped up for kids nationwide! From the first surveys and the initial prototype to the smashingly successful release, this is the story of the original "pony car." See how Lee Iacocca made his reputation with the Mustang, and meet the men who created it. Watch the original ads that launched a phenomenon, and trace its remarkable sales story-the one millionth Mustang trotted off the assembly line only three years after the first! It's the riveting tale of one of the most famous and popular cars of all time.
