Be a Weight Loss Warrior.
Â
Are you a warrior? Are you strong enough to commit to yourself?  I turned 40 this year and I have to say that I look and feel great. I have two kids that make me crazy and run me ragged but I still find the time for myself each and everyday to do the things that help me feel good about myself. That is what life is about you know... feeling good about who you are and what you have accomplished. You must take care of yourself to get through this life. If you feel bad about who you are then it will show with everything you do. I have noticed that being positively motivated has made me a better person in every catagory. I am NOT saying that I am positive every minute of everyday... I have bad days just like everyone else but I lean toward happiness as much as I can.
I became a gym rat when I quit riding horses for a living. My second child was diagnosed with autism and because of his disability I decided to be a full time mom instead of competing in the equestrian world. I felt lost without horses and my usual daily activities and was quickly falling into a deep depression. I didn't even realize that I was horribly depressed until my friends started to talk to me about my behavior. I needed something to fill the void left bare by my decision. I have never liked the gym. I was that person who paid for the membership and then never went. I just never fit in and always felt like an outsider. It is not a user friendly community in the beginning and I needed support.
My friend finally talked to me into going to the gym on her visitors pass for a few hours. I was sick to my stomach with the thought of being looked at by those people. I was overweight, depressed, and unknowledgeable about the gym. I had not one idea how anything worked or what I should even be doing there. I had that fear of looking ridiculous... basically the same fear one has the first day of school when you don't know anyone. It brings you back to those horrid teen years of not quite fitting in. My friend knew her way around the gym and she taught me all the things I needed to know to survive the gym.
I decided that after years of being a gym member that I would write about all the things I was unsure of in the beginning for all of you that have "GYM FEAR". I wrote a book called "A Warrior's Guide to Life", with my business partner, that basically maps out everything a new gym member needs to know to get through going to the gym. It is basically an instruction book for the gym with video links that will show you how to maneuver the machines and give you information about the classes using as much humor as possible. My partner is a gourmet chef and she wrote an easy and affordable diet program that has all the flavor in the world with low fat/carbohydrates. The food plan basically teaches you how to change your eating habits to fire up your metabolism and burn fat. She has developed fabulous recipes for all of you that want to be healthy.TheBestLinks

Just a Taste...
CevicheContrary to popular belief, one I think chefs keep around so that you'll dine out more often, Ceviche is simple to make and you can make it well. Just remember the ingredients list I gave you for adjusting your salsas and other foods, and use them where applicable to suit your palate. I'll give you general guidelines and the rest is up to you. Have fun!
Ingredients
3 to 4 large raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
¼ to ½ pound of raw white fish
1 lemon, juiced
1 lime, juiced
Dash of rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Cilantro, chopped
1 to 2 teaspoons minced garlic
2 tablespoons minced onion
Pinch of sweetener to balance acid, to taste
Salt and pepper
Cut the shrimp and fish into bite sized pieces, about ½ inch in size, and place in a bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients, adjusting the seasonings to suit your palate, then stir gently until well mixed. The rice wine vinegar adds a nice depth and softness to this recipe. Cover and store in your refrigerator overnight for best results. The acid in the citrus cooks the fish and shrimp. This will keep up to 3 days.
This is a gym not a bar... or is it?
There is a time and a place to use that famous pickup line. The gym just is not the place for it unless you want EVERYONE to know what/who you are doing. Unfortunately, when you meet someone at the gym it is similar to when you dated someone in high school. Everybody knows your business and they love to gossip about you. Try to keep your personal life personal. I am not saying don't date anyone at the gym...just don't let the others know that you are. Shhhhhhhhh!! But there are always those people who cannot abide by the rules of gym engagement...run from them.

Elliptical
An elliptical trainer combines the natural stride of a treadmill or ski machine, with the simplicity of a stair climber. On an elliptical you stand upright on the foot pedals and stride in a forward or backwards direction. Your feet move in a natural elliptical motion which is the closest simulation to walking and running available without the impact. Some elliptical machines even have handles for working your upper body as well - which provides a total upper and lower body workout. An elliptical trainer workout puts less impact on the joints than traditional running exercises (say, on a treadmill). It's a safe, low impact workout for anyone, regardless of fitness level. Elliptical Trainers are simple to use yet still provide weight resistant workouts that help build bone density, fight osteoporosis, and increase metabolism.

Now the Chef Speaks...
Section Two: A Tactical Approach for Winning the Nutritional Battle
IntroductionI'm the chef, and I hope you are ready for more change. This diet is a nutritional "owner's manual" for people with bodies. It is part of the path which will take you into a healthier life style with a closer connection to the selection and preparation of the food you eat. This is not only a diet plan - it's a cook book with recipes and guidelines for creating a healthier lifestyle.
After graduating with honors from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, I spent time cooking in a variety of restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area. I've studied all facets of cuisine including nutrition, produced my own line of food products for the retail market and I now own and operate my own private chef service which provides meals for food lovers, many with special dietary needs. And, as I was doing all this, I was getting larger. Believe me, it's a giant signal when your own mother starts lecturing you on how your weight can hurt your knees or joints or, or... ad infinitum. I knew I was gaining weight - for several years I had been happily enjoying excessive quantities of wonderful food. It was a gradual process, so those accompanying life habits had had plenty of time to settle into a comfortable routine, along with my system of excuses. ("Being a chef, I need to taste and experience food for my livelihood."... True, but irrelevant to my being overweight!) The results of my lifestyle finally hit me when I literally had nothing left in my closet to wear. By then my face was fat. My chin had a twin. I couldn't see my feet. Nothing I did made me feel better. Even food became my enemy, an enemy I embraced whenever I could. I knew inside that I would get to a place where I would deal with my "little problem" but I was unsure when that would happen. I knew that my health was going downhill and I was not helping myself by eating three servings of my famous Lasagna or Macaroni and Cheese. I make great food and that was part of my bane. You get the picture. So, even though cuisine and nutrition are my profession, I hadn't been able to follow those best practices, well known to me, for a healthy diet. Hey - we all do this. Its part of the human condition, the same reason you run across the occasional medical doctor who smokes.
What I wanted and needed was a weight loss plan that would fulfill my three major objectives:
Provide some enjoyment for my educated palate along the way. I hate giving up good flavor.
Offer enough variety to keep me interested so that I wouldn't quit out of boredom before I lost weight
Give me a healthy, nutritional diet that was easy to make and follow.
To get the rules and the diet you have to purchase the book... Thanks for looking!!
Just a Little Motivation...
I can give you the whole story of.. "If I can do it so can you" but the reality is that you have to decide and commit on your own. It took me forever to get it in my head that I had to find a REAL solution to lose my weight. I prayed for diet pills that would work like magic and make my flab go away but no such luck. There is NOTHING but change that will work for weight loss. It is frustrating and unfair but true. If you let yourself go like I did then you will have to pay the consequences for your actions.Just understand that changing your eating habits does NOT mean that you can't ever slip and eat something fattening. I make a point to eat what I like once a week as my reward for following my program. It's friggin hard to tell myself at 11pm that I can't put food in my mouth but I replace it with hot tea and my craving goes away. I remind myself about how I look in the mirror and what I want from my body. I look fabulous but everyday I have to fight my food cravings. I could live on chocolate chip cookies and milk but I know that I can't if I want this body. It may seem vain to some people but I want to have the hot body enough to give up basically anything for it. I look forward to my Double Double with cheese on the weekend... woo hoo!!
One More Tease
Sauces make the world go round....
This is one of the first recipes I adapted for retail markets. This is the recipe for the base sauce, but I think it's a good idea to experiment by trying new ideas. I have 5 unique BBQ sauces which were marketed in grocery stores and Farmer's Markets, and they all sprang from this one, so I am giving you the starting recipe. You will need to use a 4-cup measuring cup to make this. I hope you have one, because that is how this puppy works. I suggest gathering the ingredients and the measuring spoons before starting, since it makes things so much easier, and therefore more fun. Clean up is a dream because you use so few utensils and only the one measuring cup.
Ingredients
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 tablespoon dry mustard
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 cup brown sugar
6 tablespoons Lea and Perrins (Worcestershire Sauce)
6 tablespoons cider vinegar
Tabasco to taste
Ketchup
Add all dry ingredients together in the 4-cup measuring cup. Add the vinegar to the dry ingredients and mix into paste. Now add the Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce. When well mixed, fill with ketchup to the 4 cup line and stir to blend. Heat the sauce to melt the sugar. You need not boil it. Place in quart jar or other airtight container and refrigerate when cool. This will keep in the refrigerator forever.

- I'm sure a lot of people going to a gym for the first time would be reminded of school days.
Especially when everyone else looks fit and you don't. Interesting lens.

- Great lens! Congrats on your healthy life. I really have a hard time getting into exercise, but my daughter is working on me! She really wants me to exercise more. And she's GREAT at it (certified Turbo Kick instructor). I have to work at it.
