The Difference Between a Cupcake and A Muffin

Ranked #17,380 in Food & Cooking, #307,938 overall

One for breakfast one for dessert

I've often wondered about the difference between a cupcake and a muffin. I assumed muffins were for breakfast and cupcakes were dessert or everything else. Recently though, I've read a lot of chit chat on the the cupcake Rocketmoms group that cupcakes can be for breakfast too. What?! So then, what's the difference between a muffin and a cupcake? I looked it up online and wow! What a debate? Some people argue that a cupcake is a mini cake and a muffin is quick bread while others argue that the quantity and type of ingredients in the two make the difference. I'll let you be the judge. Take a look at the super yummy ideas below.

Is it about the Mixing?

The muffin batter is usually mixed as little as possible. Whereas; cupcake batter is mixed to allow little air.

Could it be in the formula?

According to Diana's Desserts, the "basic formula for muffins is 2 cups flour, 2-4 tablespoons sugar, 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 egg, 1/4 cup oil, shortening or butter, 1 cup milk. When the fat, sugar and egg ratio in a recipe reaches double or more than this, you have reached the cake level."

Is the answers at Answers.com?

According to Answers.com, "A muffin is any quickbread (mixed by muffin mixing method & does NOT contain yeast) that is in the shape of a cupcake. A cupcake is any cake batter mixed with the straight method or creaming method made into the shape of a cup."

Muffin: Savoury or Sweet

Muffins are often baked with oil and can be savoury or sweet. They also tend to be healthier and heavier than cupcakes. Bratannia at englishforums.com says, "If you threw a cupcake against the wall, you would hear something of a "poof!" If you threw a muffin, you would hear a "thud!" They tend to be eaten for breakfast and or with coffee or tea. However, they are welcome during lunch and dinner too.

I prefer muffins, as cupcakes are generally too sugary sweet.
  • goldenecho Jul 8, 2011 @ 3:50 pm | delete
Hmmm.... I think the difference is that muffins are thicker and CAN be sweet but don't have to be. Cupcakes MUST be sweet, or they're muffins.

The Old Joke

According to Anonymous #22 the difference is... when your wife is younger you call her cupcake. When she is older with double chin, you call her muffin. LOL! It isn't very nice to say, but it's funny. Does the same idea work for the husbands?
