Different Types of Massage Therapy

Treat Yourself to a Massage and Forget About the World....
Massage can be good for injuries, relaxation, stress or ongoing problems. There are so many different types of massage. Each one will give different benefits. Whether it be that you want to prevent or treat a sports injury, improve energy flow, relieve deep tissue problems, relieve stress or just simply relax, massage is a good, healthy, non-toxic treatment.
In this lens you will find more on the benefits and different types of massage and also a bit on my personal experience with massage. I myself am completely hooked on massage. The really great thing is that I have a friend who is currently training to be a massage therapist and I am one of the ladies that she uses to practise on. Lucky me!
I am Now Hooked on Remedial Massage

There are so many different types of massage. I recently had my first remedial massage I have always stuck to the nice relaxing massages that really just work more on the surface and get you nice and relaxed.
This time however, I had lots of knots in my neck so I decided to have a 'proper' massage. It was a new experience for me. At times it really hurt, don't get me wrong my massage therapist told me to tell her when it hurt too much. I must have been in real knots because when she had worked on certain areas and pressed to release - wow, like I said it hurt. Before the massage she asked me if I had any proplem areas, so I told her about my neck.
She told me that with many women with wearing high heels and all the other strains on our legs, the buttock area can be a good area to work on. I told her that I never wear high heels but she said it could still be quite knotted. I though well I don't get any pain there so I can't see that being an area worth working on but I didn't say anything. Anyway when she pressed there to release whatever it is that is released - I nearly jumped off the bed! Then she would work the area again for a while and press again, every time she pressed the pain got less, like a lot of whatever was knotted had been gotten rid of.
A couple of days after my remedial massage I felt great! I am going to stick with remedial one. I am due one now (not been for a couple of months).

Some tips to Starting Your Own Business....

When becoming a massage therapist, presuming that you are working to make yourself rich and not somebody else you will need clients to work your healing hands on. This lens includes some tips for getting clients and keeping them.
- Build up a relationship with your clients. Some will be more difficult to get on with than others. Try to work them out - assessing whether they are the sort of person that likes a chat about whats going on in their life etc. However, if they are quieter clients who just enjoy the peace and relaxation of massage - then respect their wishes. Try not to babble on about yourself to much (unless asked), this can put people off.
- On their first massage get them to fill in a questionaire which includes their email
address and birth date. On their birthday send them an electronic birthday card - customers really appreciate this. Maybe as a birthday treat - offer free manicure if a full body massage is booked, or something similar.
- Run a Christmas club for clients - when they come in for treatment and want to put some money into their christmas club save money for them (giving them a card letting them know what their payments are up to). They can then redeem this cash at Xmas, to use either on their own treatments or as gift vouchers for xmas presents.
- Have a referal incentive - anyone who refers a friend which results in a booking for an hour or two treatment gets their next foot massage free, or something similar.
- Keep yourself calm (no matter how stressed you are underneath). Your clients are coming for the whole relaxtion thing, not just the massage. Its got to be a good experience if you want them to come back.

Swedish Massage Therapy

This is the massage therapy that is most used. With a Swedish massage your therapist will not perform a deep massage into the muscles but stays on the top layer using gentle, circular strokes. Massage oil or lotion is usually used. It is very relaxing.
This is the one that I have had the most of - you come away feeling nice and chilled out. It will not help any problem areas though as it does not get deep down into the muscles.

Trigger Point - the new way to Massage....
Knots in muscle tissue can be caused by lack of oxygen and restricted circulation and the trigger point method which involves short prepeated strokes to the points will release this.
The book has sold in excess of 220,000 copies since the release of the 1st edition in 2001. This second edition is completely updated and includes a new chapter which is specifically for massage professionals and also a chapter on systematic muscle relaxation techniques which will help to reinforce the power of trigger point massage.

- OMG, too long ago -- I think late June 2010 -- it was the end of my PT from when the trunk hydraulic struts failed and slammed on my working hand, wrist and forearm. I had 6 months, pretty much, of therapy with many massages -- from 3 per week down to 1 per week. I seriously need to resume them on a regular basis -- maybe 1 a week? What would you recommend?

- I would go with remedial massage - bit more intense, but you sure feel the benefits. I would go to an individual massage therapist aswell, not one that works for someone - then they really put their heart into it :)
