Determining Learning Style

Ranked #11,606 in Education, #256,238 overall

What is a learning style?

Have you heard the terms visual, auditory, and kinesthetic thrown around in homeschooling circles? Have you wondered why what seemed to work teaching one child is totally wrong for another? Have you noticed that some people need to physically do something to understand it? If you've ever had any of these experiences then you've already had an introduction to learning styles. Keep reading to learn what the differences are, how to discover your learning style, and what to do about it.

Visual Learners

A visual learner is someone who learns best by seeing things. For example, he learns better by reading text than from listening to lectures.

Auditory Learners

An auditory learner is someone who learns best when he hears. When memorizing, this learner is better able to memorize passages from listening to them, than by looking at them.

What now?

So you find out you or your child is an auditory learner. Do you throw out every visual learning tool and start doing everything aloud? Of course not, that is an extreme example of course. You should seek to use the information about learning styles to enhance learning. Be sure to include learning in the ways that are best, but not to the exclusion of other ways. Practice in weaker areas can build strength. Only using your strongest muscles will weaken the others further.

I find this to be a very interesting topic and after so many years of homeschooling I can see how learning style is a HUGE factor in how I offer subjects to my children. I enjoyed the links on your lens.
