A Rock Overview

Rocks are naturally occuring substances generally made up of minerals and mineraloids. The materials in these rocks are closely bound together, their structure and hardness depending on their exact chemical composition. There are three main types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. This lens is about the differences in the rock types and how these rocks are useful.

A Little About Rock Types

type=text

Rocks are classified by particle size, chemical composition and by mineral composition. Often times you can have one type of rock change into another.

An igneous rock is formed when hot magma is cooled. Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments, organic matter or chemical precipitates are somehow compacted together and solidified. Metamorphic rocks are formed when any type of rock is acted upon by temperature and pressure.

All three types of rocks have sub-categories depending on their exact chemical composition. There really are no distinctive boundaries between them.

Mississippi Marble a type of Metamorphic rock

Marble is foliated metamorphic rock, a rock that comes from limestone. It is often used for sculpture and building materials.

Granite

Granite is a commonly used intrusive, igneous rock. It usually has a coarse texture and is usually quite large and hard. The type of granite you have depends on the concentration of feldspar and quartz found in the rock.

Portland Quarry

Rocks and therefore minerals have long been extracted from quarries. These quarries are often used to get building materials.

Intrusive vs Extrusive

Extrusive rock is formed from hot magma which comes out of the earth and outside as lava. Intrusive rock is formed from magma that doesn't reach the Earth's surface.

Gneiss

Gneiss rock is usually foliated and medium coarse in texture. It always comes from either igneous or sedimentary rock originally.

Banded Sedimentary Rock

This banded sedimentary rock contains iron. The red area is due to iron 3 oxide, the alternating grey part is due to the presence of iron 2 oxide.

Quartzite

Quartzite is a type of metamorphic rock that comes from sandstone. When sandstone is heated enough under pressure, it becomes quartzite. Cementing materials such as iron oxide, clay and carbonate help to give the quartzite its streaky look.

Importance of rocks

Rocks have been mined for their mineral ores for many many centuries.

Coal

Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock normally occurring in layers or veins called coal beds.Coal begins as layers of plant matter which have accumulated at the bottom of a body of water.

Metamorphic Rock Texture

Banding is layering in rocks which may alternate with granular sections. Metamorphic rocks can also have Slaty cleavage, a layering of fine granular materials. The third type of metamorphic rock texture is Schistosity, coarse granular layering.

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals. It is commonly used for sculpture and as a building material. The term "marble" refers to metamorphosed limestone.

Would you happen to have a map that shows where most of these rocks are found?
