About Digestive Disorders

Some brief information about disorders of the digestive system.

Digestive disorders are quite common, affecting more than 100 million people in the United States. For some, digestive disorders are simply an irritation, causing only discomfort, and necessitating only minor lifestyle changes. For others, the disorders may be more serious, even fatal.

It is important to know the signs of digestive system disorders, and possible causes. Common symptoms of digestive disorders include:

Since these symptoms occur with different types of digestive disorders, a qualified physician should always be consulted if you experience any of these problems. Your doctor will be able to accurately diagnose your problem, and prescribe the proper treatment, and if not, he will be able to refer you to a specialist who can treat you.

Keeping your digestive system functioning properly is important to keep you healthy, so if you think you may have digestive problems, get it treated, before it's too late.

5 simple tips to reduce acid reflux.

If you suffer from Acid Reflux, you know how painful it is, especially when it hits in the middle of the night, and wakes you up with a throat full of stomach acid.

Well, here are some tips to help avoid acid reflux.

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals, rather than three large meals. Smaller
amounts of food require less acid to digest.

  • Avoid high-fat foods. These take longer to digest, thus requiring more acid.

  • Maintain an upright position for at least 45 minutes after your meal.

  • Limit alcohol consumption.

  • Avoid eating for a couple of hours before going to bed, to give the food
    a chance to digest.

Autoimmune Hepatitis

Autoimmune Hepatitis is a potentially life threatening disease in which the body's immune system attacks the liver cells. Like other autoimmune diseases such as Ulcerative colitis, this attack causes inflammation and is also considered a chronic condition. If left untreated over time, this disease can lead to cirrhosis scarring and hardening (cirrhosis) of the liver and eventually liver failure. Autoimmune Hepatitis also has classifications such as type 1 and type 2. In Type 1 Autoimmune Hepatitis, half of the patients have other autoimmune disorders such as Ulcerative Colitis, type 1 diabetes, autoimmune anemia, Graves' disease, Sjögren's syndrome, thyroiditis and proliferative glomerulonephritis. Type 2 Autoimmune Hepatitis is less common and mostly affects girls ages 2 to 14; however this type can also be found in adults.
