Where is Ancient Digger Archaeology Now?

Ancient Digger Archaeology has been operating for well over two years now. Several months ago the site was picked up for syndication and is now featured on sites like Treehugger, Discovery News, USAToday, IndiaTimes, Independent,uk, and many others.

Whether you're a stay at home mom, academic, archaeologist or anthropologist, historian, professor, or student, Ancient Digger was created to teach all of you about world heritage, archaeology, and history, in a way that's educational and enjoyable.

What is Archaeology?

What's the Difference Between Anthropologists and Archaeologists?

Archaeologists have the same goal in mind as cultural anthropologists. They learn everything there is to know about a particular society. The difference is, they can't talk to the people or ask questions. Why? They're all dead. Archaeologists study the things they left behind and infer behavior and information from that.

Like Indiana Jones, archaeologists study artifacts. Artifacts are things like tools and pots and other implements made and used by people. Ecofacts are the remains of plants or animals that were used by or eaten by people. Archaeologists also study landscapes, and there is a particular field called Landscape Archaeology, which allows the study of the modified landscapes and the behavior put forth to alter it.

Archaeology in other fields of study

Subfields and Disciplines

  • Bioarchaeology--study of human skeletons to reconstruct physical traits, health status, diet.

  • Cultural resource management (CRM)--The branch of applied archaeology aimed at preserving sites threatened by dams, highways, and other projects.

  • Palynology--study of ancient plants through pollen samples.

Why Archaeology?

I wanted the chance to hold something in my hands that was thousands of years old. An artifact untouched from another century or era is pretty amazing.

30 Reasons Why You Should Become An Archaeologist

Twitter Users Speak Out: Reasons Why You Became An Archaeologist
After my recent epic tale entitled 30 Reasons Why You Should Become An Archaeologist, I took to twitter to find out why archaeologists in the field really chose their profession. Was it glamour? Was it the money? We all know there's not that much unless you suddenly become the face of a syndicated history show.
Fields of Anthropology
Most archaeologists are aware of the types or fields of anthropology. Yet, students looking for archaeology or anthropology schools, haven't a clue which field of anthropology they would like to conduct research in. It's easy to specialize in a certain culture, civilization, or even prehistoric animals, but in order to do so you must educate yourself on these four fields of anthropology first.

Caesar's Creek Fossil Bed

When I was a child growing up in Ohio, my class would take yearly field-trips to the Caesar's Creek Spill off to go fossil hunting. As a child, it was hard to stay focused on the task at hand. We would never read the signs stating we had to leave behind the fossils bigger than our palms, and now that I'm older, I can appreciate why the signs were posted.

Excellent lens. I'm too far into my career now, but if I had my time again I could think of nothing better than working full time in either/or Archaeology or Anthropology.
