around and about digital new media art

Digital Art is a form of Contemporary Art where the artwork is created either partly or entirely with computers as the Artists' tools. Today's Digital Art extends to a wide spectrum of different areas; digital photography and visualisation, 3D (animation), installation, digital performance, wearable art, multimedia or electro-acoustic composition, to name a few.

The early pioneers for Digital Art started experimenting already during the 1950's. 'Oscillons' that Ben Laposky, American mathematician and artist, generated by an electronic machine in 1950 are considered as some of the earliest images of the digital realm.

Also, at the end of the 50's Nam June Paik and John Cage meet each other. Both became important leaders of the digital/new media creation.

In 1968 The Computer and the Arts London organised the 'Cybernetic Serendipity' exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, curated by Jasia Reichardt, director of ICA and author of The Computer in Art, UK.

In 1975 Benoit Mandelbrot published his visionary book 'Les objets fractals'. Mandelbrot had joined the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center already in 1958 and taken part in early development of computer systems.

The first Ars Electronica festival took place in Linz in 1979. Ars Electronica is still very much alive as festival today and has gathered an important collection of the history of the development of digital art.

Also Andy Warhol took part in the digital creation: he used Amiga for self-portrait and a portrait of Deborah Harry in 1986.

The first New York Digital Salon took place in 1992.

With the further development of computer technologies, following Moore's law, the Digital Artists of today have a wealth of tools at their hands. It is also very common for Digital Artists to develop required tools themselves. This has manifested as a perfect marriage of Art & Technology, bringing forth important pieces in the recent history of Art.
