Today, most of the compact digital cameras available on the market do NOT have a traditional optical viewfinder. Manufacturers removed the optical viewfinder from cameras in order to make room on the camera body for larger LCD screen. This is why digicams without viewfinder have LCD's of up to 3" while cameras with a viewfinder have LCD displays of up to 2.5".
Advantages of Cameras WITH Viewfinder:
- you can use the viewfinder when it's too difficult to see the image on the LCD screen in bright daylight.
- the viewfinder uses a lot less battery power than the LCD display
- it's much more stable to hold the camera up to your face and use the viewfinder

The benefits of a viewfinder include being able to frame & shoot in sunny conditions that would wash out the LCD display. Also once you have the settings set, you can just turn off the LCD & shoot through the viewfinder for framing to conserve battery power.

- I use a dslr now because the first digital camera I used disappointed me in the delay to capture the image, the inability to control shutter speed or aperature and a desire to use optical-vs-electronic zooms. Nice info, well presented, thanks.
