Digital Flower Art

On this lens I've decided to look closely at digital flower art. A lot can now be done in the digital darkroom to manipulate photographs and turn them into peices of art. I've been doing just that with some of my flower photos, and people love them, so here I'm going to feature some of the best of my own work and hope to bring together the best I can find of other people's work, too. I'll also be listing some of the programmes you can use to play with your own ideas.

When is a Photo Not a Photo?

Digital Rose Art. See my zazzle store for more designsThere was a time when people said 'the camera does not lie.' It was never really true, as there was always the darkroom in which a certain amount of image manipulation could be done. It was often necessary to adjust an image to make it look correct to the human eye, which is more sensitve than any camera. Today, of course, we can whizz off a hundred shots on our digital camera, download to a computer and change the images as much as we want. So now the camera doesn't itself lie, but we can have a great time playing with images and turning flowers into floral art.
I've found this can produce some startling results with a very contemporary look that transforms a humble flower into something unique and special. Have fun scrolling through this lens and see the wonders of the computer age in flowers!

Echinacea Flower Gone Digital

Echinacea. Click here to see my digital art on many products at Zazzle

Flowers are very beautiful just as they are. However, they have also always been the subject of artist's work. Digital art is just a new way of using nature for inspiriation. I take lots of flower photos that aren't suitable for this kind of treatment, but echinacea works wonderfully well. If you want to try this type of flowers to floral art, you really need a good bit of software to enable you to do it. I chose Photoshop, with all its complications! Not an easy programme to learn, but wonderful effects can be had when you spend the time to play with it to see what you can do. This technique, a type of digital mapping, works well with images that are graphically clear. Soft colours and blurry, dreamy shots just don't give you the punch this method needs.

Have a go yourself! I appreciate not everyone wants to spend hundreds on software to play with their photos, so here are some alternatives for you to try.

Make Your Own Digital Flower Art

Learn to play!

  • Take photos of just one flower or leaf. Look for simple patterns in nature.
Isolate your subject-keep the backround plain and simple
Once captured, take your shot into your processing programme and increase the contrast.
Play with the colours. Change them, distort them
If you have photoshop, play with filter effects until you find one you like.
Be creative! Play. Art isn't formed by being too serious!

Amazon Spotlight Personal Review

Adobe Photoshop CS5 [Old Version]

Amazon Price: $585.97 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

I have spotlit Photoshop beause I've never regretted buying it. I use Photoshop exclusively for all my photo editing, and find I can make lovely artwork as well as doing basic photo editing. It has so many functions that the Adobe support that comes with buying the product is very welcome. Once you've registerd your purchase, Adobe run video and written tutorials, a place for you to get together with other users and solve your editing problems. There is plenty of reularly updated advice about the functions of Photoshop and its add-ons.
It can handle RAW files and some of the editing done in RAW is far superior to anything you can do with a jpeg. White balance correction, spot removal and fine tuning colour balance are all much better done in RAW.
That said, it is truly amazing what you can do with a jpeg. Nothing takes the place of a well taken photograph, of course, but once you have that shot, what do you want to do with it? Perhaps turn it into a piece of art, or a poster with text, or a birthday card? All is possible with text overlay and the layering system that enables you to build up your finished work bit by bit. I can definitely reccomend Photoshop for any serious Photographer or graphic designer.
