Just What is Digital Scrapbooking?
Digital Scrapbooking is quite similar to paper scrapbooking. They both have the same goal of using pictures to tell a story that can speak for itself. They both allow you to be creative with your photos and to use fun things like stickers, embellishments, ribbons, curled edges, etc to create unique and beautiful scrapbook page layouts. And, both digital scrapbooking and paper scrapbooking are fun and addictive! The difference is in the process. With digital scrapbooking the whole scrapbook page is created on the computer using photo or image editing software. Then, the completed page is printed, put into your album of choice and that's it! No glue, paper trimmer, ruler, etc; everything you need and more is contained within the software. And all the supplies including layouts, embellishments, and even the pages themselves, can be used again and again without any added expense.
While there are many similarities between digital scrapbooking and paperscrapbooking, as you can see, it's the differences that make digital scrapbooking more affordable, faster and easier.
What do You Need to Get Started?
If you're ready to try digital scrapbooking, you only need these few things to get started!
- Photo or Image Enhancing Software
There are many different options for digital scrapbooking software including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Lumapix: FotoFusion, Microsoft Picture It! Paintshop or Paintshop Pro. - A Printer
Most any brand of photo quality printer will do for printing your digital scrapbook pages. Make sure that the printer has resolution of at least 200-300 PPI (pixels per inch) and the capability to print 12x12 pages is helpful as well, but not necessary. - Printer Ink
As far as ink goes, this is probably one of the biggest expenditures you'll incur as you get into digital scrapbooking. To help defray these costs a bit, check out sites like 123inkjets.com and carrotink.com where you can get discounted printer ink and save yourself a bunch of money. And to cut your ink costs even further, grab a 123inkjets.com coupon to use with your order. - Paper
Many digital scrapbookers use regular white cardstock or ink jet 80lb cover paper for most purposes, it's affordable and you can get it easily from local stores. You might also use transparencies, stickers and other types of custom papers to print your digital scrapbook pages.

What Can You Really Do With a Digital Scrapbooking Program?
Of course, it does depend on the software you get, but for the most part, you can do pretty much anything with a digital scrapbooking program that you can when you're paper scrapbooking. For example:You can make stickers, ribbons, shadows, embellishments, text overlays, unique graphics, and curled edges.
You can use different brushes that are built into the program to create a wide variety of effects on your digital scrapbooking project.
You can cut out different shapes without repeating measurements over and over again if you want more than one of the same shape.
You can add vellum shadows, pop out effects, reflections, and, you can even add wrinkles to your paper!
And this is just the beginning! Anything is possible with a good image editing program and some creativity. And in the end, your scrapbook laygouts will end up being more original and more beautiful than ever; all without using any paper until you've finalized your creation.
Best of all, when you get an effect or layout you really like, you can save it and then use it as many times as you'd like with just the click of a button!
