The Canon Digital Rebel XTi is the successor to the Canon Digital Rebel that is the #1 choice of Consumer Reports.

The original Canon Digital Rebel had 8-megapixels. The "new and improved" XTi has bumped it up a notch at 10-megapixels.

The new Rebel XTi kept all its good features including its great performance at high ISO settings. These settings are the ones you use for low-light, sports, or other challenging situations.

The Canon Digital Rebel was already the best camera for the money, but not Canon has added several improvements to make it even better.

It has a more sophisticated, 9-point autofocus system that more expensive Canon SLRs have. You can shoot many more photos in a burst--up to 27 high-quality images, compared with 14 on the old model. The display is bigger and menus are easier to navigate.

It also has one of the most comprehensive systems to clean away dust that can cause blemishes on the image.

The lens that comes bundled with the camera delivers very good images but if you want to go one step further, get an even better lens (like the ones below) and even better results.

The new digital Rebel is a great choice for an affordable SLR, especially if you already own lenses that fit it. If you own any other lenses that have an EOS mount, they will fit. If you don't own one of those lenses, consider spending a few hundred dollars extra for a lens that's better than the one that's included if you buy the kit.

The D40 becomes the most compact Nikon digital SLR to date, it's trimmer in all directions and yet maintains a comfortable grip and sturdy 'quality feel' construction. The slightly rounded top and sides give the camera a more inviting appearance, perhaps more appropriate to the first time SLR market.

As mentioned despite being very slightly smaller than the Canon EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi) the D40 does not compromise comfort or ergonomics with a sensibly sized hand grip and careful rear molding. The rear of the camera is dominated by the 2.5" LCD monitor which now doubles as a camera status display screen as well as the normal image review and menus.

From a features and functionality point of view the D200 is much closer to the D2X than the D100. Highlights are a magnesium-alloy body, an 11-area AF sensor, 3D Color Matrix Metering II, 5 frames per second continuous shooting, 2.5" LCD monitor, USB 2.0, 1/250 sec X-sync plus WiFi and GPS support. The D200 is about 100g heavier than the D100 but 240g lighter than the D2X. Best of all is the price, body-only, $1,849 in the US.
