What is Digital Storytelling?
Digital stories are multimedia tales that engender emotion and learning. They enable the sharing of rich personal experience - a trip, a new product/service, an encounter, an insight, a family outing, your pet's favourite antic...
They usually involve about 250 words and 12 photos/slides. They are very easy to create with free software.
You can use your existing photos and slides to make your own movie.
Digital stories have evolved and grown because they engender emotion and involve very little technical knowledge. Anyone can create their own movie from their photos and produce a great story using images and sound.
You can get access to your very own Digital Story Telling Starter Kit by clicking this link:

Digital Stories: Communicating Culture
Digital storytelling can be used to communicate and share culture as this series of digital stories shows. The digistories are hosted by Australian Museum and are created by Indigenous People in Australia.
- Creation Story
- All over Australia, Dreaming stories tell of the ancestor spirits who created the land and everything on it. This story, told for us by Aunty Beryl Carmichael, is from the Ngiyaampaa people of western New South Wales and tells how the Darling River was created long ago. Filmed on the banks of the Darling near Menindee.
- Gulalga: story of the mountain
- One of the younger storytellers featured on the site, Warren Foster, tells the story behind the creation of two mountains and an island. Warren is from the Yuin-Monaro people, on the far south coast of New South Wales and the main mountain, Gulaga, holds deep significance for his people. Filmed on the shores of Wallaga Lake.
- Eaglehawk and Crow
- Long ago, many of the animals were in human form. This story is about two warriors from the Ngiyaampaa people of western New South Wales. It is told for us here by Aunty Beryl Carmichael and was filmed near Menindee, in the country of Eaglehawk and Crow, on the banks of the Darling River.
- Emu and the Jabiru
- From the Marrkula clan in Arnhem Land comes this story of greed between two brothers-in-law and the creation of the Emu and the Jabiru. It also offers an insight into the life of the Gapuwiayk people. Translated by Bangana Wunungmurra and told by Clancy Guthijpuy Marrkula. (Narrator: Kevin Smith)
- How the water got to the plains
- When travelling through the arid regions of Australia, Aboriginal people would move from waterhole to waterhole. The Butchulla people of Fraser Island have a story that tells how the water first got to the plains, and it is told for us here by Olga Miller.
- How the water got to the plains story explanation
- Olga Miller and her sister first heard the Dreaming stories of her people, the Butchulla, on Fraser Island, off the Queensland coast.
Here she gives the background to the tale of how fresh water first reached the arid plains of central Queensland, and recalls childhood holidays by the beaches and rainforest of Fraser Island.

Digital Storytelling Helps Autistic Child
I used DST last School Holiday Program with children ranging from Grades 1 - 6. It was a knockout success! The greatest success story was an autistic boy (11 years) who had been at the program for 4 years and hardly ever said a word. He spent hours looking through pctures of himself from all his previous programs and put them together into a sequence of his own choosing then proceeded to astound everyone as he started to talk about all the things he had done in the pictures, starting in a quiet tiny voice and eventually getting right into it and putting on funny voices, raising his voice and shouting even laughing would you believe!
It was amazing. he even put pictures of other children in there and said they were his friends - and the amazing thing was, they came and looked over his shoulder as he worked and he let them. He even started communicating with them, laughing and giggling. It was astounding. When his story was shown to his mother she couldn't believe her eyes. It was the biggest breakthrough he had ever had! There is definite power in storytelling and Photostory 3 is an easy and quickly rewarding program for children of all ages. Even the grade ones managed it quite successfully.

Digital StoryMapping
The project is described as follows:
StoryMapping is a call to action. We are taking the lessons learned from more than a decade of work in Digital Storytelling, and integrating it with an emergent tool set of digital mapping technologies now available to the broad public.
- Vickery Memory Map - Remembering a Neighbourhood
- The Story:
This is a memory map I worked with to try to tease out stories about places and events from my childhood. The landscape is completely different. All but one building that stood in the time of my childhood still exists in the couple of square miles that make up Vickery. The schools, the stores, the houses, the churches, the open areas, long ago became another world, a warren of endless apartments. - Save Our Shoreline
- Another model of the phototour narrative, but this time looking at a local area where redevelopment threatens to end an unusual space for creative expression and wild exploration.
- New Orleans neighbourhood mapping project
- A group of colleagues in New Orleans, led by Bruce France and Nick Slie of the arts company, Mondo Bizarro, has been collecting interviews from people effected by Hurricane Katrina. The interviews are shared on i10witness.org. With iWitness Central City, Mondo Bizarro has begun a neighborhood mapping project in association with CDS. The project will present a place-based cell phone tour of this historic neighborhood, a long time center of African American culture. The maps have videos embedded.
