Why I'm a happy digital scrapbooking camper!

Behind every raving lunatic digital scrapbooker, there is a story of how they got to be that way. Mine's below.

I'm also going to share with you some of the things I've created to help others get into this amazing hobby, things other people have done, and places I have found that I believe can be helpful for digital scrapbookers to know about.

In case you don't know yet: Digital scrapbooking = creating scrapbooking layouts on your computer with the help of graphic editing software (such as Photoshop Elements, Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro).

You'll also use beautiful scrapbooking supplies to make them look great. But digital scrapbooking supplies  - unlike their paper counterparts - can be used over and over and over again....

Some digital scrapbooking layouts I've made

All of the supplies I've used on these layouts came from http://www.ScrapGirls.com. I digitally scrapbook in Photoshop most of the time except when I am demonstrating how to use Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro.

Free digital scrapbooking eBook

I wrote this eBook because I constantly get asked the same questions about becoming a digital scrapbooker:

What kind of software do you need?

What kind of printer do you need?

What kind of supplies do you use?

How do you learn to start digitally scrapbooking?

How do you file your digital scrapbooking supplies?

What do you do with your layouts when you are finished with them?

...and more...

Finally, I decided that I better just answer them all at once and this FREE eBook was the result. It covers all of the basics and should get you going.

Free eBook "starter kit" turns your dreams of scrapbooking into reality today! Download it here without charge.

Digital Scrapbooking Software I Recommend

I know there is other software out there, but these are the packages that I recommend because you can do whatever you want with them. I personally used Photoshop for my layouts. Most people (meaning those people who don't have a yen for being a professional designer) use Photoshop Elements. It's da BOMB!

How I became a digital scrapbooker

A tale of woe with a happy ending

Here's the tale of woe part....

I used to be a happy paper scrapbooker. Then I started working for major paper scrapbooking companies and discovered that some people thought that I was a "bad" scrapbooker and that my layouts were "cheesy". In an effort to overcome my problem, I started accumulating lots of supplies.

My stash got bigger and bigger (in fact, I ended up with an entire room full of them) and my layout production almost stopped because I was afraid to ruin all of that pretty stuff.

"I'm not good enough," I thought. "People will laugh if they see my layouts."

I wished for the good old innocent days before I had worked professionally in the industry. I had enjoyed my hobby back then.

Here's the crisis that led to my solution...

But then a miracle happened - at least I consider it to be one.

After I started ScrapGirls.com I suddenly had to have surgery on my left wrist. I couldn't use my hand! All I could do is mouse.... and I had to make layouts for our newsletters! I couldn't make paper ones anymore.

Oh no.

And so I HAD to learn how to make digital scrapbooks for our samples or we would be in trouble. And I HAD to learn FAST!

I dove in and figured it out myself because I couldn't find any good resources that taught me how to digital scrapbook in a conscise, methodical way. I found some random tutorials around the web. I found things that talked about software from a photographer's perspective. But I couldn't find anything that taught me what I needed to know. I had to force myself to figure it out (of course, there were some crying and mouse throwing moments that occurred...)

This is the happy part!

After I learned to make digital scrapbook layouts, I felt like I had been let out of jail! All of the things about paper scrapbooking that caused me to seize up when creating were GONE! There was no way to ruin paper, mess up embellishments, destroy my photos, or make unrepairable layouts. I could fix anything as quickly as using the undo command. I could even delete the entire layout and start again and I hadn't ruined a single thing.

This means that I can now play with my supplies and have fun. And you know what the best part of all is? Now, I don't care if anybody likes my layouts or not because I like them and the whole experience. Digital scrapbooking did that for me and that is why I love telling people about it so much!

10 Cool New Ideas for Revamping Your Digital Scrapbooking

Digital Scrapbooking Layout by Ro created in PSE 5.0

  1. Look at some home decorating magazines and find a color combo that you like. Scan the photo into your computer and then use your color-selector eyedropper and Scrap Girls (from ScrapGirls.com) ScrapSimple products, create a layout using the colors from the room.
  2. Look on eBay for old advertisement and posters. Use them to inspire your digital scrapbook layouts.
  3. Notice the typography of ads on television and challenge yourself to mimic your favorite in a layout. (Keep a notebook handy to sketch your ideas or you'll forget what you see.)
  4. Drive around you neighborhood and snap photos of interesting details you see and use them to create a digital brush. (Don't know how to do that yet? I teach how in my Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed tutorials - available for Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro.
  5. Make a digital scrapbooking layout about five unusual small things that make you happy. (For instance, I have a couple of pair of socks with pink flowers on them that I adore. Why I love them so much, I can't explain, but I adore the silly things. I'd definitely include them in my layout.)
  6. Notice cool tags on clothing (there are lots of them) and when you can snag one off of new things you buy, keep them around for inspiration.
  7. Write away your scrapper's block by making a layout that is simply a big journaling entry about what you do in a single day.
  8. Take photos of the exterior of your home or still shots of items such as a child's toy sitting on the lawn or in the snow. Tell about why that is meaningful to you on a digital scrapbooking layout.
  9. Make a digital scrapbooking layout about who you would like to become - not who you are now.
  10. Get a magazine and flip it open with your eyes closed. Point to something on the page and then make yourself make a digital scrapbooking layout using that item as an inspiration point (the shape, the color, the word, etc.)
