Why use a Digital Camera?

Are you still using a regular film camera to take pictures of family, friends and vacation spots? Are you purchasing several rolls of film in the process that must be carried, installed, replaced and developed at an additional cost? Do you have your film developed, then pick it up when it's ready? The prints look great, why use a digital camera?

Digital images are less expensive.

First, it's not uncommon to fit 500 or more photos on a single memory stick. That is 10 rolls of film at the largest, high quality settings. These are repeated shots with no time out to change film or change film type. If you are using a film camera you would have to change film for both indoor and outdoor shots. If you buy a digital camera there is no need for frequent trips to the store. You save time, money and fuel by not having to purchase numerous rolls of film then have them developed.

Digital images can be enhanced.

Second, effective processing means it's possible to bring the not so good shots up to perfectly satisfactory images with an image enhancement program like Photoshop, without having to first scan the negative. If some pictures are too dark, they can be lightened. What you might have discarded to bad exposure or color can now be saved with a small amount of effort.

Digital images promote sharing.

Third, it is much harder to share film photos with family and friends unless everybody gets together. Digital images are of far superior to scanned images for the internet. With a digital camera it's easy to upload digital photos. Then, not only can family and friends view the digital photos, but they can download their own. You can also send images by email instead of sending printed photos by regular mail. This is faster, more convenient and relieves the photographer of the financial and organizational trouble of delivering the digital photos.

Digital cameras are smarter.

Fourth, the photographer instantly knows about camera failure and other user error. No more forgetting to load film in the camera or trying to remember what film speed you loaded.
You have instant pictures and no lost rolls of film. Your pictures are in the digital camera until you delete or save them elsewhere allowing you to view your pictures instantly instead of waiting for the film to be developed.

Panasonic Lumix 8.1-MEGAPIXEL Compact Digital

Simply set the 8.1-megapixel DMC-FS3 to iA mode and let the four Intelligent Auto functions team up to help prevent shooting errors. Intelligent Scene Selector chooses the mode that best fits the situation; MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) helps prevent blurring from hand-shake; Intelligent ISO Control helps prevent motion blur; and Face Detection helps produce clear portraits by optimizing the focus and exposure settings. The 33mm Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with 3x optical zoom takes wider shots than an ordinary 35mm lens. This is helpful in small rooms or crowded places, for example, letting you fit more people into a group photo. There's also an Easy Zoom button on the camera top - just press it, and the optical zoom and Extra Optical Zoom instantly extend to full telescopic position. This quick zooming lets you catch even fleeting opportunities. The brightness and contrast of the large 2.5" diagonal LCD adjust automatically in 10 steps as ambient light conditions change, so images are clear, bright and easy to see day or night, indoors or outdoors.

Digital images are more convenient.

Fifth, save space and protect images. Instead of having numerous photo albums with pictures that fill your house, you can save images to your computer, memory stick or to disk. You might even store copies with an online service in case of disaster. An enormous amount of images can be saved on cd, ipod, cell phone or memory stick and be carried in your purse or pocket.

In conclusion, the question you should be asking yourself is why shouldn't I use a digital camera? When you do don't be surprised if you use it much more than your regular camera.
