Giving Your Art and Crafts Dimension!

A cool, non-fumey way to make your arts and crafts pop.

Just What is Dimensional Magic?

a brief overview

Years ago, I liked to decorate furniture, though just slapping on a coat of paint wasn't my cup of tea. What could I do to spice my things up? After looking around, I found that Plaid sold a kit for faux mosaics: a box of instructions, paper cutouts, and a big bottle of dimensional fluid. When the last two things were used in conjunction, any person with a bit of a steady hand could turn just about anything with a hard surface into a faux mosaic work of art. Nowadays, Plaid no longer offers the kit, but you can still find the Dimensional Magic through Royal Coat and other online outlets.

Using Dimensional Magic

It's Not Just For Mosaics

From the Royal Coat site: "Take your decoupage projects to new heights with Dimensional Magic. Its clear, stay-put formula creates faux mosaic, quilt and other textures while allowing the full color of the surface below to shine through."

Nowadays, I use Dimensional Magic for artwork for a 3-D effect; and to protect and add dimension to my bottlecap magnets and jewelry. It's fast and easy, and unlike resin, is thick enough that it won't run.

STEPS FOR USE: If you're considering layering your paper art with Dimensional Magic, first give it two or three coats of Modge Podge or any other handy craft glue. This will give your paper a good layer of protection; I've found (via the hard way) that not doing this might give your paper a "wet" look. Also, make sure your paper is firmly glued down to whatever surface you are decoupaging, with no bubbles underneath.

DON'T SHAKE THE BOTTLE! This will cause bubbles within the Dimensional Magic, and sure as the sun rises they will be right there in your finished product. In fact, I keep a scrap piece of paper handy with every project, and squeeze out any bubbles onto the paper before I begin. The bottles come with a pointed tip for easy and even distribution. Working from the outside of the paper in (I've found this is the best way), simply trace over your art or project until it's filled. Wait three to six hours, and voila! You have a clear, hard glaze over your decoupage.

Fun, simple and fast!

Other Uses

I've also found that it's a great filler for the magnets in which I use seed beads or other small objects. I simply add a thin layer of Dimensional Magic, fill in the beads, etc., and add another layer of Magic until it's thinly coated. So, you see, it also works as a glue!

Give It a Try!

In closing, I've found that Dimensional Magic turns my art and crafts into something with a bit more pop and pizzazz. It's water-resistant, giving your work a protective finish. And while I do like resin, I don't have to worry about fumes and oozing when using Dimensional Magic.

Have fun!
