The "New Atheists" are out in force, coming from all kinds of backgrounds.

From the likes of Daniel Dennett (cognitive scientist/philosopher), to Richard Dawkins (biologist), to Christopher Hitchens (literary theorist) the anti-theists are taking their war against religion into the public sphere.

What is an "Anti-theist"?

Atheists do not believe in God. Anti-theists do not believe in God and take their disbelief to militaristic extremes. Instead of merely disbelieving in God, they hate the idea of a God.

D'Souza to the rescue

But we of the believing persuasion are not without defense. Dinesh D'Souza, a great writer and thinker, has held many debates with the anti-theists, and I have been enjoying them. Here I have posted a few of their debates and list some of the highlights of the exchanges.

Dinesh's Books on Amazon

"What's So Great About Christianity" is available in hardcover and paperback. It gives plenty of ammo for combating the Anti-theists.

Also check out "What's So Great About America", a patriotic defense of our amazing nation.

D'Souza vs Hitchens

"Is Christianity the Problem?" (First video)

I have watched Hitchens debate many Christians, and he always brings up this challenge (not verbatim): "Religious people claim that moral values come from God, and assert a sort of moral superiority over atheists. I challenge you to show me one moral act that a person of faith can perform that a nonbeliever could not."

A few have suggested that a believer could pray for someone and an atheist, in good conscience, could not. Hitchens does not accept this answer, since he does not believe in the efficacy of prayer. I think it is a pretty good challenge.

D'Souza vs. Dennett

"God is a Man-made Invention" (Second video)

I thought that the religion of John Frum was pretty interesting. One of D'Souza's arguments that he uses in all of his debates is that atheists pride themselves on the use of facts as opposed to faith. He explains that even science has to use faith-based assumptions in approaching the study of the world around us. Listed below are Science's Three Faith-Based Assumptions:
1. The universe is rational
2. The universe is lawful, it can be expressed mathematically
3. The universe we experience corroborates with the machinations of the brain; we are able to comprehend the world
For more explanation on these assumptions, you'll have to watch the debate!

D'Souza vs. Shermer

"Is Religion a Force for Good or Evil?"

Follow this link for the debate

D'Souza points out that when we tally up the deaths caused by religious groups compared to those caused by atheistic ones, the atheists win by a landslide. In fact, very few people were killed in the name of religion.

* Number of people killed in the Spanish Inquisition: 2,000 over 360 years (about 5.5 a year)
* Number of people killed in the Salem Witch Trials: 18 (yep 18)

Contrast that to the millions killed by Stalin, Pol Pot, or Nazi Germany and the atheists' argument falls apart. D'Souza and others continue to debate the New Atheists, and there's much more to be seen.
