Preschooler Dinosaur Games

Preschooler Dinosaur Games

Looking for preschooler dinosaur games? We've got lots of dinosaur games for little kids from preschoolers to young primary age children. These games have been tried and tested by my preschooler boy who is dino mad. We've included free online games and downloadable games from the PC.

I really struggled to put the games on this page into an order. They are all really very good. Why not bookmark the page and come back to try them all. We found a lot of not-so-good games while hunting for these, hopefully we can save you some time.

Dinosaur Train Games

PBS Kids

dinosaur train game

The Dinosaur Train Games are on the website for the Dinosaur Train TV series. At time of writing, there are six mini games. They are nicely done and will appeal to fans of the show.

We particular enjoyed 'All Aboard' (above) where you have to seat dinosaurs on the train, collect their tickets and serve snacks. I learned the order of the periods in which dinosaurs were alive: Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous. They had never stuck before, but somehow, traveling through the periods on a train helped me remember them. So the Dinosaur Train games are educational too!

Diego Dinosaur Rescue

Downloadable Dinosaur PC Game

We really enjoyed Diego Dinosaur Rescue. DS1 was around 2.5 when we first played it. He could do the 'stomping' himself, but most things involved him pointing at the screen to tell me what to do. It was his first computer game and he loved it. Now he's nearly 4 and it's just at the right level for him to play himself. It's definitely a game for young children - ideal as a first computer game. We learned quite a bit about dinosaurs too.

A great thing about this game is that you can play free for an hour. And you can actually play quite a lot of the game in an hour. You'll get a really good idea of whether it's worth buying. We got the full version. Definitely worth it for us.

Diego's Dinosaur Adventure

Downloadable Dinosaur PC Game

Diego's Dinosaur Adventure is similar in style to Diego Dinosaur Rescue. So if you enjoy that one you'll like this too. We have both games.

Again, you can play for free for one hour.

Dinosaur Games from Sheppard Software

Dinosaur coloring and matching

cretaceous coloring

We enjoyed the dinosaur games for children from Sheppard Software. Very entertaining but educational too. DS1 (nearly 4) loved the Cretaceous Paint game. I liked Triassic Paint, I have a soft spot for early dinosaurs like Coelophysis. And DS1 is brilliant at matching games so the dinosaur themed matching games are great. There are herbivore, carnivore and fossils games where you match pairs of cards, and a game where you match dinos to their shadows. Engaging graphics and sound effects. Highly recommended.

The above is DS1's Cretaceous creation. He really enjoyed this. He has used similar kids drawing games before, but never one so full of dinosaurs. Great stuff. He's really into symmetry and pairs of things at the moment, hence the two-by-two theme (just in case you thought there was some weird Noah's Ark thing going on there ...)

Here's the link again: Dinosaur games for children from Sheppard Software.

Dinosaur Roar Games - Matching, Memory, Jigsaw Puzzle

This is a lovely set of games for preschoolers based on Paul Stickland's wonderful Dinosaur Roar! illustrations.

Orange roar dinosaur poster print
Orange roar dinosaur poster by PaulStickland
Dinosaur Roar! Memory Game
This is a delightful memory game where you have to remember the order in which the dinosaurs grr and replay it. Simple and great fun.

Dinosaur Roar! Pairs Game
A big 4x9 grid matching game with gorgeous Paul Stickland dinosaurs. The large grid makes this a little more challenging that some of the smaller pairs games around. My 4 year old is an amazing at matching games so it's nice to find one that stretches him and with brilliant dinosaurs too.

Dinosaur Roar! Jigsaw Puzzle Game
Three delightful Stickland dinosaur puzzles, starting with a simple 4 piece jigsaw and getting harder. Great for learning to control a mouse.

Wonder Pets Save a Dinosaur

Age 3-5

Wonder Pets Save a Dinosaur Game

Wonder Pets Save a Dinosaur is a lovely little game. We hadn't come across the Wonder Pets before, but they are quirky and cute. You get to dress up the Wonder Pets in dinosaur costumes, solve some little puzzles and rescue a Triceratops. Great for preschoolers.

More Preschooler Dinosaur Games

For little kids up to age 5

Dinosphere Games Gallery
A lovely collection of simple games. Includes a dinosaur crest matching game where pterosaurs swoop down to match pairs. A game where you have to hatch a duck-billed dinosaur egg while fending off predators and eating to keep your energy up. And a game where you have to return a dinosaur to his lost herd by tracking footprints. Nice and simple. Younger kids will enjoy playing with their parents. School children will be able to play on their own.
Dinosaur Dash
You control a baby triceratops with the mouse and move through a prehistoric terrain collecting leaves and bashing rocks and trees, Very simple and great fun. Good for learning mouse control. You don't need to be too accurate, the Triceratops will keep moving towards the cursor.

Dino Dig Games

Dino Dig Games

Looking for dino dig games where kids can learn how to become a paleontologist or dinosaur hunter? If you want to dig up T-Rex fossils and assemble them into skeletons then we've found the best games for you. Young boys love dinosaurs and these games are a great way to capture their interest and help them learn lots more dinosaur facts.

My four-year-old boy is a dinosaur expert and gets very excited playing these games. He needs help with most of them at the moment. Older kids will be able to take the controls themselves.

See also: paleontology for kids.

Caillou Dino Dig

For young kids

Caillou Dino Dig Game

Caillou's Dino Dig is a nice simple game for young kids. Use the brush to dig up the bones and put them in the right crate, then take them back to the museum and assemble into a skeleton.

As I write this, my four year old son is having a great time playing Caillou's Dino Dig on the Netbook that we share. The Netbook is a great size for him and we have it set up on the children's table. He's really pleased to have a dinosaur game that he can play all by himself and he's enjoying trying to work out what the dinosaur will be from its fossils. My 2.5 year old is watching and offering advice.

Dino Dan's Dino Dig Game

Age 4-7

dino dan dig game

In Dino Dan's Dino Dig Game you find bones in Dan's garden and assemble them into skeletons. The game includes printable activities and a mini-game where you feed dinosaurs. My four year old really enjoyed feeding meat to the T-Rex! It says age 4-7 but I'd say it's perfect for the younger end of that age range (and even younger with parental help). Great for fans of the Dino Dan TV show.

Dinosaur King Dino Slash

Locate places on a map to get dino cards

dinosaur king dino slash game

This Dino Slash game is different and very cool. You have to register (for free) to play it.

The bottom part of the dino holder shows a map location. You have to find the exact same spot (anywhere in the world) using the top map - which uses real map data. There's a hint to get you on the right track. The locations are related to the Dinosaur King TV show.

Tip: If you think you're in the right location but nothing happens then just adjust the location slightly - you have to be in just the right spot.

When you find a location you unlock a dino card for your dino holder.

Younger children would need a lot of help with this. I have to admit I really enjoyed this one myself. I'm going to go back and carry on playing in a minute!

Online Dino Dig, Fact and Quiz Games

Learn about dinosaurs while playing games

We'll be adding to this list as we work our way around the web finding dinosaur games to play. Happy dinosaur hunting!
The Baryonyx Mystery
We loved this! It's an interactive paleontology learning game with Bill Oddie as presenter. You watch video clips and then answer questions. Most of the time is spent learning by watching video clips including real dinosaur scientists presenting facts. DS2 (nearly 4) was able to follow the clips and answer the questions correctly - he did know most of this already as he has learned about Baryonyx before. I enjoyed it as an adult and learned a lot. Highly recommended. Access may be restricted to those in the UK.

Smithsonian Dino Dig Interactive Game
We enjoyed this one. It teaches dinosaur paleontology. You use tools to uncover a dinosaur skeleton and prepare it to be taken to the museum. DS2 (nearly 4) was really excited at the point where he could identify what kind of dinosaur it was - we won't spoil to surprise! It's based on a factual event and is full of paleontology info and at the end, lots of dinosaur facts. It doesn't take long to play and there's probably not much replay value, but definitely worth playing.

Dinosaur Quiz
Our own ten question multiple choice dinosaur quiz. Think you know about dinosaurs? Hopefully you'll learn something interesting about dinosaurs.

Dino Dig - Find the dinosaurs hidden in the grid
A cute little game where you have to specify a grid reference for a little paleontologist to dig at. Will he find dinosaur bones? This game is great for helping kids learn how to follow grid references.

Dinosaurs: Fossil Hunt Game - Find Fossils and Build a Dinosaur
This game from National Geographic is very cool. It's a dino dig game with a difference. You need to uncover fossils to build a dinosaur skeleton, starting with Coelophysis in the Triassic era. But the fossils are hidden in a Mahjong-style game, use the tool to uncover the fossil in each tile then remove pairs of tiles. Very neat! It's against the clock, but you do have a shuffle option in case you get stuck. I rather enjoyed playing this one myself. Great for mouse skills and logical thinking.

Dinosaur King Dino Dig 3.0 - 4Kids TV
For fans of the Dinosaur King TV Series. Help Dr. Taylor find and unearth dinosaur fossils and become a dinosaur expert.

Online Dinosaur Games

Play Dinosaur Games Online

Want to play dinosaur games online? We've found lots of great sites where you can play fun dinosaur games, many for free. Dinosaur arcade games, dinosaur hunter games and loads more online prehistoric fun. And there are several really good dinosaur virtual worlds to explore.

Bubble Bobble with the Little Green Dinosaur

Dinosaur Arcade Platform Game (Retro)

Bubble Bobble Dinosaur Game

I can't resist adding Bubble Bobble. Bubble Bobble is a very old arcade game that I played a lot on my home computer as a teenager. I spent many pleasant hours being a little green dinosaur blowing bubbles to capture his enemies.

This is a good game for little kids who have reasonable coordination. The keys are very simple: left, right and up (jump) on the arrow keys and space to blow a bubble.

When you capture an enemy in a bubble and then burst the bubble it turns into fruit. If you take too long them ghosts appear!

Dinosaur Arcade Games

Online and free

DINOSoars! Collect Pterodactyl eggs in this fun platform game
This one's great fun. You control a yellow pterodactyl as she flies around to collect her lost pterodactyl eggs and return them to her nest. Loads quickly and the gameplay reminds me of Sonic the Hedgehog. My kids are a bit young to control the game on their own at 2 and just 4 (the 4 year old is close) so they watched over my shoulder as I played and gave tips: "Watch out for the buzzy thing" (makes you drop your eggs), "there's the naughty T-Rex" (stuns you) and "look an egg"!

Baryonyx Fishing
A Baryonyx game, cool! We like our British dinosaurs. You control a hungry Baryonyx who wants to catch his lunch. Simple controls so young children will be able to have a go. Not easy to do well though.

Dinosaur King Meteorite Game
Save dinosaurs from meteorites! Shoot at the meterorites and destroy them before they reach the dinosaurs.

Dinosaur Pinball Game
I love pinball games, this one has a dinosaur theme with a T-Rex backdrop. Yep, pinball with dinosaurs, we like it!

Me and My Dinosaur Online Game - Adventure games
This games is for older children or at least kids who have great computer game skills, but it's intriguing so we're including it here. It's the story of a boy and his pet Tyrannosaurus Rex. The introduction tells the story of the boy and the dinosaur in a way that draws you in. The game is a platform game in which you control the boy using keys and the T-Rex by throwing him a bone with a mouse click - the two collaborators must work together to get through the levels. We haven't played this game all the way through but it's definitely worth a mention.

Dino Run
Dinosaur platform game where you have to outrun the meteors threatening to destroy the earth and collect dinosaur eggs. The graphics are simple but effective. My four year old could get a fair way just by pressing the key to move forward. He loved climbing over the Stegosaurus. I enjoyed playing it. See if you can get picked up by a passing Pterosaur!

Dinosaur Virtual Worlds

What is a Dinosaur Virtual World?

Online kids worlds with dinosaurs

Dinosaur Virtual Worlds are online game environments where a kid controls a dinosaur to explore the world and interact with other characters. These games have a lot of similarity with virtual worlds for grown-ups such as Second Life - the difference is that you get to be a dinosaur and play lots of games. These games are on online flash games which load in your web browser.

The worlds are all different, but typically involve a notion of money or tokens that allow you to buy things, a home or cave that you can decorate, clothing to buy, interaction with other characters, mini-games to play and locations to explore. Club Penguin is a very popular kids virtual world, but it doesn't have dinosaurs! The ones below do.

DinoSawUs

Dinosaur Virtual World for Kids

DinoSawUs is an online, interactive world of dinosaurs and dinosaur games. DS1 is a little young to play this on his own, but we've enjoyed playing it together. It's full of fun mini-games. DS1 really liked a coloring game and I enjoyed navigating through molten lava and a mini dance move game. You can also interact with other players. And there's a credit system for buying upgrades. DinoSawUs is for children aged 5 to 11.

It's free to play, but you can upgrade and get membership for a fee.

It says that you and a friend both get extra credits if you enter a friend's identity when you sign up. Our (not so secret) identity is Friendly George if you want to send some credits our way.

MyDinos

An online interactive dinosaur environment

MyDinos (Beta) is dino world where you collect baby Dynamals, go on quests and play mini-games. This as an RPG style game along the lines of Pokemon (and feels very familiar to me as a long-time RPG player). As you walk around you encounter other dynamals which your dynamals must engage in battle (or try and run away). MyDinos uses a turn-based battle system with moves like Screech and Scratch. Currently in Beta and free to play (we can expect additional features for paid members in the future).
