Dazzling Dino Craft

As a teacher I always knew how to captivate my class. Teach them anything on Dinosaurs and they could be involved for hours. If you have a dinosaur-crazed child, it can be difficult to find books suited to their level to read with them. Instead, try some easy activities with your dino mad child.

Dinosaur activities and dinosaur craft ideas can help engage your child and help them devleop their interest.

Excavating for Fossils

Fill an empty two litre container with water and add a few plastic dinosaurs (you can often pick up a bag of these cheaply at a two dollar shop or supermarket.) You can also add a little glitter, or food colouring. Place in the freezer overnight
The next morning, run water over the container to soften the frozen shape from it. Take it outside and give your child a small hammer. They can have fun excavating the dinosaurs from the ice.
While finding the dinosaurs, you can talk to your child about the ice age, and how one of the theories of how the dinosaurs became extinct involved the world all turning to ice.

Puppet Madness

Dino Sock Puppet

An easy way to turn an old sock into a puppet. The best thing is no sewing is required! Cut out two eyes, a series of triangles, and four leg shapes. Using glue or a stapler attach the eyes tot he top, and then the triangle shapes a scales sticking up along the back.
Glue on little thick legs to make it into a sauropod dinosaur. Talk to your child about how these were the biggest types of dinosaurs, and were plant rather than meat eaters.

Shadow Puppets

This is a great one for any of your child's favourite dinosaurs (in our house we each have our own favourite dinosaur.) If you are not a confident artist, borrow some dinosaur books from the library. Find pictures that show a good dinosaur outline and photocopy these. Glue these to cardboard (cereal boxes work well for this). Cut around the dinosaur shapes then attach a hotdog stick to the outline. Make a shadow puppet display with a few different shapes, then put on a puppet show. Draw the curtains and turn on a light or use a torch to shine onto the wall. Make dinosaur sounds as they chase each other across the wall.

Stegosaurus Tail

Use a large sheet of paper for this. Draw a large long triangle onto the paper as shown. Supply your child with crayons and have them colour in the triangle. If they are old enough they can cut the triangle out themselves. Fold in half to make a cone and staple along the longest side. Stuff the cone with ripped up newspaper, and then staple it closed.
Cut up smaller triangles from coloured card and staple along the top to make pointy scales.
Attach a length of wool, or string to the shape. Your child can them tie it around their waist to make a stegosaurus tail.

Stomping Dino Feet

You will need two empty tissue boxes, paints and coloured card for these feet.
Using the hole in the top of each box as a guide, make it a little larger so your child can slide their feet in. Lay both boxes onto a large area of newspaper and let your child paint them all over with dinosaur colours of green and brown (or pink if they prefer!) Once they are amply covered put them aside to dry. Cut out triangle shapes and attached to the bottom of the boxes. These are the stomping toes. Your child can stomp away to their dino delight!
