"I Want A Dinosaur Book"

I worked as an elementary school librarian for many years.  "I want a dinosaur book" .... I heard these words many times each day.  Children want to read about these giants of long ago.  They are curious about where they lived, what they ate and how they spent their time.   I have made a list of some of my favorite dinosaur books.  These are books that I could never keep on the shelves of my library.  You and your children will find these books educational and entertaining.

My Favorite Dinosaur Books

  • Danny And The Dinosaurs by Syd Hoff.
This easy-to-read adventure is just right for beginning readers.
  • Digging Up Dinosaurs by Aliki.
This is a non-fiction science book for elementary children. Very interesting factual information about dinosaurs.
  • ABC T-Rex by Bernard Most.
A delightful ABC book for children. A very hungry T-Rex devours each letter of the alphabet.
  • Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs by Byron Barton.
The bright colors and shapes in this book make it a great choice for very young children.
  • Edwina, The Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct by Moe Willems.
This author/illustrator really knows how to tickle your funny bone. A great read-aloud for primary children.
  • How Big Were The Dinosaurs? by Bernard Most.
This is a question that children frequently ask. This book helps children understand the size of some of the most popular dinosaurs.
  • How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? by Jane Yolen.
This rhyming picture book shows how dinosaurs behave and misbehave at bedtime. Children will find the illustrations very amusing.
  • If The Dinosaurs Came Back by Bernard Most.
What would the dinosaurs do if they were alive today? Children will love the ideas in this book.
  • Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp by Carol Diggory Shields.
These dancing dinosuars will have your children rocking and rolling right out of their chairs. Great fun!
  • Patrick's Dinosaur by Carol Carrick.
While visiting the zoo, Patrick begins to ask his older brother various dinosaur questions. This is a good selection for grades 2-5.

How To Make Your Child A Better Reader

Tips For Sharing Books With Your Child

Read aloud to your child every day. Be consistent and let your child know that this is something to look forward to. GET EXCITED ABOUT READING!

Take turns reading aloud. You read one page, your child reads the next, and so on.

Ask questions about the story. Ask about the main characters, the setting and the problem in the story. Ask your child to predict the outcome of the story. Ask your child to summarize their favorite stories.

Be patient and wait while your child tries to sound out new words. Help pronounce difficult words quickly without interupting the flow of the story.

Read books on a variety of reading levels. Choose different genre of literature to share with your child. You will want to read fiction, non-fiction, biography, poetry, mystery, science fiction, historical fiction, etc.

Praise your child often and make reading time a fun time to spend together.

Dinosaur vs Bedtime

By Bob Shea

This is a great book for getting kids off to bed.

Dinosaur vs. Bedtime

Amazon Price: $10.87 (as of 01/02/2010)Buy Now

This is a charming bedtime story in which a dinosaur roars, "Roar! I'm a dinosaur! Roar! Nothing can stop me!" when he comes up against various obstacles: a pile of leaves, a big slide, a bowl of spaghetti, even "talking grown-ups" but when he approaches bedtime, his roar doesn't work and he falls asleep.

The author wrote this book for his own "little dinosaur" and it is delightful.

His mother is reluctant to keep these huge beasts but she comes up with a perfect solution for all to live together in harmony.
