Dirndl - a traditional maid´s dress....

Ever been on the Oktoberfest? Ok - HE has got his Lederhose. But what about HER? All about the Dirndl - and why it is more than prettying up the girls there ...

The origin

The Dirndl is an old traditional dress for women. Its origin is located in the mountains of the European Alps (= Alpen ). In the past it was worn in that region by almost every girl or woman of the peasantry, or during work. Styles and patterns are numerous; and could differ even from town to town.

Dirndls - still popular

It´s interesting to say, that the Dirndl today is not only a cliché, seen on almost eyery TV folkmusic channel in Germany, or as a tourist attraction on the Oktoberfest in Munich (= München ).
Especially in the more rural regions of Bavaria (= Bayern ) or Austria (= Österreich ), it is still popular and a living part of daily life. Here it may vary from common Dirndls, worn for everyday work, up to very precious ones, worn for certain occasions like church, or marriage.

Wearing Dirndls

Some say, the word "Dirndl" is derived from the german old-word "Dirn", which means "girl". However, today the worlwide popularity of the Dirndl comes from the Oktoberfest. Here a Dirndl is a "Must-Have". It is fun, it is fashion, and, sometimes, it is erotic or even sexy..... But don´t mind - japanese tourists wearing Dirndls on the Oktoberfest actually is not living tradition!
You will find many shops in Munich selling Dindls, as well as in Bavaria or Austria. Just look for shops selling "Trachten Mode" (and don´t forget the Lederhose for him - doesn´t make sense either, if SHE is going in Dirndl, and HE wears simple Jeans.....)!
By the way - did you ever think of a pretty present? Here you are!
