Disability and Mobility Aids for the Disabled

The range of effect of a disability can be huge. Some people experience an effect on mobility but are still able to walk, sufferers of arthritis can find the excruciating pain stops them from being able to grip items while paraplegics may only have control of their mouths and eyes. To try and make life a little bit easier, a whole host of disabled aids have been created. This squidoo lens aims to look at just a few of them!

Living Aids in the Kitchen

Aids to help you grip

Right angled knife allowing easy gripping for disabled peopleThere are a number of disabled kitchen aids, many of which help people with arthritis who have trouble holding items. Easy Grip scissors increase the ease with people can cut, while right angled forks and knives reduce the need to manipulate the hands and wrists.

Some items may even be of interest to those who are not disabled - the cap-gripper should be of benefit to anyone who has struggled to open a jar, the multi-grip is useful for opening bottle tops and the jar pop key will help with impossible lids.

Equipment to help you grip

The CheekyThere is also disabled equipment to help you grip outside the kitchen. SuapGrip plugs make it easy to pull a out a stiff plug from any socket, while key turners have a comfortable grip and allow the user to exert gradual pressure on a key for easy turning. Meanwhile, the "Cheekey" provides leverage and grip, and also has a ring pull opener for those arthritis sufferers who are beaten by those nasty little rings on cans.

Mobility Aids: Walking Sticks

Traditional Aids to help you walk

Arthritis grip caneThere are a huge range of walking aids available today , but those with a slight mobility problem could do worse than go for the most traditional of aids - the walking stick. The walking stick can be made of metal as well as wood, while T-shaped walking sticks weigh little, are easy to fold and can be adjusted to suit the user.

There are also more specialised walking sticks for those suffering from arthritis, which are designed to be easily gripped, as well as an adjustable quad cane with a curved neck for those with balance problems. The neck serves to place the users weight directly over the stick, increasing stability and safety. The shaped handle is designed to fit into the palm of the hand, and is tapered to fit the fingers.

Finally there is the walking stick seat. The seat can be folded flat into a stick, or opened up into a seat - perfect for those days out!

Walkers and Rollaters

TriwheelsWhen walking sticks ar not sufficient, folding and rigid walker frames can be used. These can also be fitted with wheels. Meanwhile, the Hi-Riser Folding Frame is shaped to help people rise from a sitting position, and can also be used as a toiled aid.

Tri-walkers are often prescribed for use in the house. These lightweight walkers, which can be made of steel or aliminium, can be easily folded away.

Rollators are used for more outside use, and offer greater stability to the user. These often come with a shopping basket and an integral seat.

The latest version, the Lets Go, also has a clip on tray for transporting drinks and other items around the house. However, this version is used indoors and does not have an integral seat.

One rollator that has both a seat and a backrest is the Deluxe Rollator from Promedics. This is a lightweight aluminum rollator, and can be folded into a very small area.
