Handicapped Pets : Dogs and Hip Dysplasia : Arthritis in Dogs : Dog Rehabilitation

A ball rolls into the street and your dog chased it. Things happen so fast and usually they're accidents. You and your vet can discuss options. Your special dog may be able to live a full life with a dog wheelchair. Find help with pet rehabilitation.

Check out the inspiring customer testimonials page sometime. If you're reading this page, perhaps you're an animal lover. Maybe you have a pet who has a disability or you know an animal who could use some help. These chairs are not just for dogs, but cats may benefit from them, too. Every situation is judged on its own circumstances.

Our pets are parts of our families. We work closely with veterinarians to see what is the most humane thing to do in every situation. A specially made wheelchair, something made for your own dog, to grow with your animal, could be just the thing to enrich both his or her life and bring back some of the joy to the life of your entire family!

Your dog doesn't want you do be his nurse any more than he wants to be confined to his little bed all the time. He wants to go back to the way things used to be.That could be much more probable than you think.

These chairs and carts may be permanent or temporary for use while in rehabilitation.

Help your best friend get back rocking and rolling with medically sound dog wheelchairs by a Veterinary Orthopedic Surgeon:

These dog wheelchairs are designed with all of the needs of mobility-impaired and disabled dogs in mind, not only animals who've been involved in accidents. Universal but customizable.

Dogs with conditions of:

* Neurological impairment

* Complete or partial rear paralysis

* Hip dysplasia

* Surgical recovery

* Rehabilitation

* Arthritis

* Fractured spine

* Lumbar or thoracic disc injury

* Any other condition that results in rear leg pain and or weakness

* ---> Pet must have normal front leg strength to use one of the carts

Since I first published this page we adopted a kitten who is physically challenged. He uses three legs. Because of a birth defect, one of his front legs is misshapen and bent. He's had to learn to do some big and small things differently from our other cats but there are some things that be can do even better.

We sometimes call him our little kangaroo, because he can jump higher than his siblings. We've had plenty of pets and some of them have had challenges. It can be a challenge for the pet parent. A commitment of time, compassion and money but the benefits often outweigh what you put into it. Good karma. Some of us just need a paw up.

Medium Dog Wheelchair 40-60lbs Dog

Dog and Cat Wheelchairs by Best Friend Mobility

This cat used the Best Friend Mobility for the first time at the Orlando Global Pet Expo. The cat (named Phantom) had not walked in 3 years, was mamed by a dog and can not stand or place any weight on her back legs.

See what improvement of life this best friend mobility pet wheelchair has made in this cats (Phantom) quality of life. There was a big group gathered around to watch her be fitted in the pet wheelchair, it took 45 seconds to fit her and she was walking immediately after. There was not a dry eye watching Phantom take her first steps in 3 years, remarkable to witness. -- from YouTube description

Aging Dogs : Best Friend Mobility : Help with Dogs

Dog's Friend Mobility : Help for Pets Currently unavailable

The Mobility Solution For Your Aging Best Friend.

Parents of aging pets are buying and building stairs for their animals to get on and off of the bed and the couch all the time these days.

Arthritis and other ailments make it difficult if not impossible for our older pets to get around.

With these problems, your dog may have trouble keeping active and may limit its physical activities like walking and running. An aging dog may choose to spend his or her time lying on his/her bed by necessity. A specially made cart can help extend your pet's happy and lively years, making your time with him or her more enjoyable.

You don't have to leave your aging pet behind any more. Check this out! Maybe the best really is still yet to be. Don't let your best friend down if all it will take to get him going again is a little help.

Re-Training Your Dog

An article I read said that a growing percentage of Americans refer to themselves as their pets' Mom or Dad. That is how we feel.

Your dog probably does jobs around the house like keeping unwanted visitors away, fetching your morning paper, and keeping patrol on your hedges against intruders. He or she probably welcomes you home from work and makes you feel like the best pet parent(s) in the world!

As such, an incident or condition leaving him or her handicapped or unable to use his/her limbs can be a devastating blow to your dog's confidence and sense of usefulness. Yes, dogs have self-esteem too, and handicapped dogs can have difficulty adjusting to mobility limitations.

As your pet's body is no longer up to what he used to do, he is just as apt to suffer from depression as we would and it may have other physical manifestations.

People don't realize or remember that a big function of well made pet wheelchairs is to regenerate your animal's muscles. It's physical therapy.

Get a badly crafted one-size-fits-all or home-made doggie kart and it may make matters worse. The animal's suffering and physical situation may be made worse.

Make it easier for handicapped dogs to do their jobs by:

1. Building a ramp in your porch
Build a ramp on one side of your porch to make it easier for your dog to go up and down from your porch to your garden or backyard. Best Friend Mobility dog wheelchairs are equipped with all terrain wheels that have excellent traction so you don't have to worry about your handicapped pet sliding down a ramp.

2. Clearing paths in your backyard
Your backyard or garden doesn't have to be squeaky clean. Just clear walkways and pathways free of rocks and other debris that can snag or cause your handicapped dogs wheelchair to tip over. While the sleek design of Best Friend Mobility dog wheelchairs prevent these accidents, it doesn't hurt to give your dog extra protection.

3. Training your dog again
Using a dog wheelchair will be a novel experience for your dog. Be sure to watch our video showing a handicapped dog being fitted into a dog wheelchair and taking his first steps for the very first time.

Most handicapped dogs adapt to using a Best Friend Mobility dog wheelchair easily within a week or two (with some training, guidance, and encouragement). Teach them how to balance while picking up the paper and give them time to practice their walking and running skills before playing fetch with them.

Don't forget to give your pet enough rest, patience and love as he or she becomes accustomed to this new way of life.

Height of the dog, groin to ground 5 to 15 inches. Width of the dog at the widest point, 5 to 9 1/2 inches.

How to measure the Fold of the Flank of your dog.
To measure the height of a dog for our Walkin Wheels, measure from the ground to the "Fold of the Flank" as shown here. The Fold of the Flank (FOF) is a thin piece of skin that connects the dog's upper rear leg to his body. Look at the webbing between your thumb and index finger. This skin is very similar to the fold of flank (FOF). Note: If your dog is overweight, then the fold of flank will probably hang down from his body, making the fold of flank measurement shorter than it really is. You will need to try and move the flank up to a normal position, to get an accurate measurement. -- From description

"In a world that reveres perfection and disdains anything less, most of us realize that nothing and no one can truly measure up. Yet, when it comes to choosing companion animals, most folks won't settle for less. These stories are about those animals who through birth or injury have been rendered less than perfect, and the humans who found love enough to welcome them into their hearts and homes. Almost Perfect allows you to share the immeasurable rewards those people have found." -- Amazon
