Hints and Tips for Travelling with a Motability Scooter
Hints and Tips for Travelling with a Motability ScooterWhen taking your portable mobility scooter on an overseas holiday, you need to ascertain from the individual airline the maximum weight of any mobility scooter that they will carry. I usually fly from Bristol with Easy Jet and in my experience they could not be more helpful, allowing a max. mobility scooter weight of 60 Kg.! However, certain other airlines are quite the opposite - I understand from one customer that one airline will not carry more than 30 kg - I do not think there is a reliable scooter of this weight on the market!
Each airport and airline will vary - on the last two flights on which I have taken my much loved Liteway 4 portable mobility scooter I checked in, remained on the scooter until the flight was called - then priority boarded by scooter to the steps of the place. The scooter was then put into the hold, and on arrival an Ambilift met me, with scooter ready and waiting to continue our journey!
The number of scooters and wheelchair passengers that can be carried varies per flight with each airline, so do book your scooter or wheelchair on at the same time as you make your own booking!
Bon Voyage

Vat Exemption for Disabled Products
Who and what is eligible for VAT exemption
VAT exemption - Many disability aids and other equipment for disabled people are exempt from payment of VAT in the UK. due to the user's chronic or long term disability. The user's own self-declaration in writing is normally required before such relief can be applied - for more details have a look at this section on our website. There is some discussion at present between the Revenue and the importers as to the classification of some larger scooters, which may eventually lead to VAT being charged as they are re-classified as "leisure vehicles"! As you can imagine, there is a lot of controversy about this, and the main importers, including Pride, Electric Mobility and the importers of Shoprider scooters, RMA, have instructed counsel to consider preparing a case to argue against this ridiculous situation. Surely a leisure vehicle is a Porsche...?
