Mommy, What's a Disco Stick? - What To Tell Your Kids

Ranked #216 in Parenting & Kids, #7,909 overall

Lies To Tell Your Children About What a Disco Stick Is

Here it is...the moment you've been dreading...your little one whom you've watched grow since they were the tiniest of babies looks up at you, at the adorable age of six and asks, "Mommy, What is a disco stick?"

What are you going to say? Do you laugh, tell the truth, avoid the topic, tell them they shouldn't be listening to Lady Gaga anyway? Or have you already put together your tidy little lie to spare you from the situation?

That's the way to go. A lie! Plan ahead and have your "disco stick" meaning on hand for when this question comes.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Parents shouldn't let their kids listen to this music, so it shouldn't be needed, right? The fact of the matter is, though, that you can't keep your child hidden from the world. They hear things and experience things that you never even realize. While you can try your best to keep things from your kids, there are outside forces at play that you simply cannot control.

Love Game Lyrics

Featuring The Disco Stick

Let's have some fun. This beat is sick.

I wanna take a ride on your disco stick.

Don't think too much just bust that kick.

I wanna take a ride on your disco stick.

Possible Meanings of "Disco Stick" to Tell Your Kids

(If They Ask)

Honey, "Disco Stick" is another term for microphone. The mic stand stands like a stick and she wants to "take a ride on the disco stick" meaning she wants her turn to sing on the mic.

Well, you know what a disco ball is, right? The beams of light that come out of a disco ball are called "disco sticks". So, when she says she wants a ride on the disco stick, she is saying she wants to dance.

"Disco Sticks", dear, are any set of drum sticks when they are performing a disco beat. By saying she wants to "ride the disco stick" means she wants to play the drums.

A disco stick is Star Wars light saber. It glows like a disco ball. By saying she wants to "ride the disco stick" means she wants to fight with light sabers.

NOTE: If you child has a toy light saber, this could lead to them asking others to ride their disco stick.

Well, whenever someone does limbo to disco music, the stick is called a disco stick as opposed to a limbo stick. So when she wants to "take a ride on your disco stick" meaning she wants her turn to go under the limbo stick.

Should we always tell our kids the truth?

Are lies ever right?

Should adults always be honest with our children? Or are there times when a little white lie will do just fine?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Honesty always.

Anonymous says:

I would not lie to them. They'd find out what it is in the end. It is better to be honest!

Lissa Jorgensen says:

I wouldn't lie to them because that could lead to more trouble down the line. HOWEVER, I wouldn't give them a direct answer either. I don't listen to Lady Gaga, and when I have kids that kind of music will not be played in my house or car. So, if they do hear it it's from outside sources (stores, the school bus, etc.) I will tell them that the song isn't a very nice song and we don't sing it.

It's sorta how I learned about the "middle finger." I was in middle school before I knew what it meant. When I was younger, I was just told it was "bad."

And for a while, I suppose you can use the "it makes Mommy feel bad when she hears you sing that song" excuse.

Lizabelle says:

I think that it's the rare exception, like with Santa Claus, that we should tell them a lie. But just put the truth nicely, kid-appropriate, you know. Tell them that it's slang for what it is, and that they're not supposed to say it. They're kids, but come on. Give them a little credit.

@XDLOL_GAGA says:

I would tell them the truth and show them that there's nothing wrong with talking about your sexuality but they can't shout it out loud.

Sairyn says:

Why do we feel it is necessary to shelter children from things that they will learn (much sooner than we usually expect) on their own? If a child is old enough to be singing along to a pop song, and attempts to analyze the meaning of the words in the process, perhaps this presents parents with an opportunity to have the "biology" talk before someone *else* talks to them for you. Kids are smarter than we usually give them credit for being, and I know that talks like these are uncomfortable for the parents, but part of being a good parent is preparing kids for the world that is *really out there*, not the world we wish they could live in. Lying to your kids will only make them look stupid and lame in front of their friends when the topic comes up, and that is the type of trauma that you take with you in your life - not the "sex" talk your parents had with you.

Lies. Give them lies.

Wenis says:

Eat disco sticks

GypsyPirate says:

The truth is great! But, let's be realistic and age appropriate folks. Santa Claus, remember?

AnonymousAlibi says:

OMG THIS WAS SO FUNNY!
'This may lead to children asking other child to ride their disco stick'
OMG LOL!!!!!!!!
Oh I'll just pick lies

Shanna_Redwind says:

I would lie about it, but tell them it's a "not nice" way of saying something, just so they're not going around and repeating it.

UpFriends says:

Lie! Help them maintain their innocence as long as possible.
