Rants & Raves: Dooney Bourke Online Merchant Reviews 

My take on the best online shopping options for Dooney Bourke handbags, shoes and accessories. I'll be adding new reviews in the coming months ahead. So be sure to check back often.

[4 out of 5 STARS - As far as selection is concerned, you can't get any better than browsing Dooney & Bourke's full service online store. No worry buying experience at its finest. Be sure to check out their Specials for discounts up to 50% on certain collections.

Amazon.com 

[3 1/2 out of 5 STARS] - is an "OK" source for Louis Vuitton designer handbags. The selection and inventory for this particular brand of handbags seems to fluctuate wildly. So it's often a hit or miss proposition. Also, be aware that you will most likely not be buying the goods from Amazon directly, but instead from one of the vendors that have joined Amazon's Marketplace Program.

Amazon typically does a decent job vetting and policing its merchant partners, and ultimately stands behind any transactions with its full "A to Z" money back guarantee up to $2,500 of the purchase price, including shipping charges. However, don't allow this assurance to lull you into throwing all caution to the wind and lowering your guard. You still need to thoroughly check the background of these vendors as you would anywhere else on the internet. Remember, it's your money that we're talking about.

Major Department Stores 

[3 1/2 out of 5 STARS] - Nordstrom, Macy's and Dillard's all feature a decent collection of Dooney Bourke handbags (both online and off). Although bargains are few and far between, do keep your eyes open for special sales where discounts up to 20-30% can often be had (e.g. Nordstrom's Women's Half-Yearly Sale). If your shopping preferences lean toward Nieman Marcus, Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, or Bloomingdale's, you're unfortunately out of luck. None of them appear to carry the Dooney Bourke line.

The History of Dooney Bourke 

Dooney & Bourke began in 1975 when Peter Dooney & Frederic Bourke launched their namesake company in South Norwalk, Connecticut. They started off with two notable introductory products: surcingle belts which were widely popular due to their unique, vibrant colors and stripes and classic suspenders, which experienced a surge in popularity thanks to the film "Chariots of Fire".

In 1981 Dooney & Bourke branched out into the handbag business with the release of the Tack Case and the Equestrian Bag both made from bridle leather. Along with their original distributors such as Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers, and Saks Fifth Avenue, they opened The Company Store in Norwalk, which sold among other things, Dooney & Bourke merchandise.

Dooney & Bourke made a name for itself during the 1980's with the introduction of their famous all-weather-leather handbag collection featuring the unmistakable duck logo with the russet leather trim. All-weather leather (AWL) is just like the name suggests - waterproof 100% cowhide - water sheds off these bags like it does off a duck's back. The process of producing AWL is a secret but a big part of it is shrinking the leather so that the pores are sealed.

In 2005, the company signed Emma Roberts, the niece of famous Hollywood actress Julie Roberts, to be the new face of Dooney & Bourke to introduce a new collection targeted to today's teens. Emma stared in the Nickelodeon series "Unfabulous" and has already been seen in movies such as last year's Aquamarine. Roberts will soon be seen in the lead in 2007 film Nancy Drew. As a Dooney & Bourke model, Roberts follows in the footsteps of leading ladies Mischa Barton from the O.C., Lindsay Lohan and Michelle Trachtenberg.
