In the 15th Century there were leather or cloth handbags with a drawstring, they were used for practical purposes to carry small personal bits and pieces. While purses were used for practical purposes in the 17th Century, handbags also became fashionable. Both men and women would carry small purses.

 

It started in the eighteenth century, when women would have a different bag for different occasions. This gave way to heated debates in the fashion magazines, about the proper carrying of purses, what purse for what occasion, what to carry in your purse, etc,. Women often carried such as their rouge, face powder, scent bottle, card case with cards, etc.
Actually the term "handbag" was coined int the 1900's, and referred to the bags carried by men! These handbags that men carried was the inspiration of handbags for women. The women's handbags had complicated fasteners with many internaal compartments. Women woul carry their opera glasses, cosmetics, and fans in these handbags.
Since the turn of the 19th Century, the handbag has changed it's style often. Since the 1950's we have seen the rise of the designer house of Chanel, Louis Vintton and Hermes, etc.. We now have purses, tote bags, messenger bags, coin purses, even the computer bags!
