Starbucks Partners With Green Mountain Coffee and Keurig

Starbucks K-Cups Coffee Starbucks and Green Mountain Coffee have been developing the terms of their partnership since last fall and have finally announced that indeed, Starbucks K-Cups coffee will soon be available for us to brew at home!

While Starbucks has made attempts to enter the single cup coffee market with their own Via coffee and in affiliation with Kraft's Tassimo brewer, they have not realized the profits available through the popular Keurig brewing system. Green Mountain Coffee has a near monopoly with the Keurig system having 80% of the market. Instead of a lengthy turf battle, both companies signed a deal that creates the opportunity for them to sell each other's products.

Starbucks coffee will be sold in Green Mountain's Keurig machines and Starbucks will begin selling Green Mountain Keurig brewers as well as Starbucks brewers. At the same time, Starbucks ended prior agreements with other companies like Kraft.

Starbucks and Green Mountain said last week that beginning in the fall of this year Starbucks and Tazo tea branded K-Cup portion packs will be available for Green Mountain's popular Keurig single-cup brewing systems. We can't wait to try this great partnership!

Millstone K-Cups Enter The Keurig Single Serve Race

The first inclination that something wasn't right, came when I shook the K-Cup.

"Hmmm that's odd, there is not much in here. Why does it sound as though it is hard granules hitting the sides?"

Placing it in the Keurig and pushing the button, I anticipated the tantilizing aroma of brewing coffee. I was extremely disappointed in the aroma - it smelled like INSTANT coffee! What is more distressing is that in less than a third of the cup being full, it was clear water coming from the Keurig!

Oh no... sounds like freeze dried coffee, smells like instant coffee... and yes, the flavor is like instant coffee!

I couldn't believe it! Really, is this possible and even legal? So I opened the K-Cup that I had just used. What do you suppose I found? NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Pretty much confirmed it to me! Grove Square K-Cups are nothing more than instant coffee and they are charging a bundle for instant coffee in a K-Cup that you could easily put a spoonful into a cup and just get hot water from your Keurig brewer.

The Sturm Foods k-cup is not a licensed K-Cup, it's essentially a plastic cup that doesn't contain ground coffee, but micro-ground coffee much like Starbuck's Via. It doesn't even have a filter because you don't need one for instant coffee!

BEWARE of Grove Square K-Cups! If you don't mind instant coffee, just buy the jar!

I am particularly distressed that Tully's K-Cups seem to be disappearing. Tully's Evergreen, Full City Roast, Madison Blend and Sumatra K-Cups are all going away.

They say I can replace the Madison Blend with their Nantucket Blend... there is NO COMPARISON!
I would suggest that you check their list of retiring K-Cups to see if your favorites are being discontinued.

Is it possible that we are seeing the ramifications of Green Mountain buying out their competition for K-Cups. I guess we wait and see.

    Interesting article and lots of great links. I noticed you do not speak highly of the Grove K-Cups, but I will have to tell you that their Cappuccino is especially good. I agree on the regular coffee but love their Cappuccino especially the Caramel flavored one.

    K-Cups are much more expensive than I thought they would be, but once in a while you can find them on sale. I do think the Keurig is an awesome concept though.

    Love my Keurig brewer, right now my favorite is the Barista Prima Italian Blend. Sometimes I brew it with 4 or 6oz of water and add a lot of milk/creamer to have it be more of an espresso or latte.

    great lens. you could also get a reusable ekobrew cup and use your favorite coffee to save not only money but the planet. my favorite christmas present was a keurig and the ekobrew - so much so i made a new lens on it. :) happy new year!

    There are many places that sell coffee k-cups. From my experience the best place to find discount keurig k-cups is online. There are plenty of online retailers that sell the coffee k-cups at much lower costs. I would suggest that choosing a site that has a good variety is important. Some of the online retail stores say that they sell very cheap k-cups and they do but they only have a few flavors at that low price. I prefer going with an online site that has a good selection at reasonable prices. In the end online is the way to go.
