The Mediterranean as it once was

This summer while enjoying my summer in Croatia, I was visited by some of my foreign friends from all around the world. Trying to be a good host, i have taken them to the Croatian seaside (Krk town, on Krk island to be precise). Their reaction ("OMG, this is paradise.") has made me think of just how little do tourists & travelers from abroad really know about Croatia, and its beauty. Most of the people who have heard about Croatia, have heard about Dubrovnik, Split, and Hvar & Brac islands. Although these towns/islands are on the map of every tourist agency listing Croatia, that is barely scratching the surface, comparing to what Croatia really has to offer.

It is the land of stunning landscapes, from great plains in the east, dramatic mountain ranges in the central region down to warm, sunny beaches basking on the coast of the Adriatic sea. The people are warm and friendly, proud of their cultural heritage, and despite the rush of the modern world, still know how to enjoy life and exquisite mediterranean cuisine.

So, how does one present such a thing to their fellow traveller ?

Since i believe that an impression of the place or a country is a very personal thing, i have decided to create a website featuring desktop wallpapers from and about Croatia, and let the photos speak for themselves. My goal is merely to raise awarenes saying: "This is Croatia, and this is what it has to offer". Visit us and experience it for yourself !

Wikipedia

An excellent starting page to learn more about Croatia, its location, history and culture.

Croatia (; ), officially the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska ), is a country in southeast Europe, at the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital (and largest city) is Zagreb. Croatia borders Slovenia and Hungary to the north, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast, and Serbia and Montenegro to the east.

The Croats arrived in the early seventh century in what is Croatia today. They organized the state into two dukedoms. The first king, King Tomislav was crowned in AD 925 and Croatia was elevated into the status of a kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for almost two centuries, reaching its peak during the rule of Kings Peter Kre?imir IV and Demetrius Zvonimir. Croatia entered a union with Hungary in 1102. In 1526, the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand from the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918, Croatia declared independence from Austria?Hungary and co-founded the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After World War II, Croatia became a founding member of the Second Yugoslavia. On 25 June 1991, Croatia declared independence and became a sovereign state.

Croatia is a high-income country as well as member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, NATO, the World Trade Organization, CEFTA, and is an elected member of the UN Security Council for the 2008?09 term. The country is also a candidate for membership of the European Union, and a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean upon its establishment in 2008.
