They are basically agreements between the subscriber and a dental insurance or dental plan company. Adults find them helpful when they need expensive work done; such as molding and installation of a dental crown.

Some feel it's a better idea to have dental insurance in addition to the discount dental plans, because a visit to the dentist's office can leave a family with an immediate bill for payment. Take for example, a 25% discount applied to a $1000 dental bill would still leave a family with a $750 bill. Additionally, they have to pay when the dental work is completed, so the bill will have to be paid in full before leaving the dentist's office.

Dental plans are amazingly cheap and very convenient, however. Plans do, however, differ in cost. More comprehensive plans cost a bit more, but usually not over $300. Almost all have a membership fee, which can vary from one plan to another.

Other differences between dental plans and insurance are: No maximums or minimums, no exclusions, no waiting periods and no deductibles.
