Nevis Island: An Off the Beaten Track Caribbean Vacation Paradise
I first visited the island of Nevis (pronounced "nee-vis") in the early 1980s and have been hooked ever since. I now take every opportunity to return to this special Caribbean island. If the cookie cutter, all inclusive vacation formula is not your cup of tea and you are looking for a destination as special and unique as you are, it's time for you to discover Nevis Island!
Nevis has everything you could expect from a tropical vacation paradise: beautiful beaches, year round warm weather, a variety of restaurants, and even a four star golf course. Unlike many other Caribbean destinations, Nevis remains a refuge of unspoiled beauty. If you are seeking an authentic Caribbean escape tailored to your own personal interests, the island of Nevis could be just what you are looking for. Read on and discover Nevis island!

Nevis Island Facts

Saint Kitts and Nevis Flag by flagart
Currency: Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar, which is fixed at an exchange rate of 2.68 US dollars. American dollars are, however, widely accepted. If you pay in American dollars, you will be given change in EC dollars. There is no need to convert your currency to EC dollars before your trip. Visa and MasterCard are also accepted in most establishments.
Electricity: Most hotels and vacation rental homes operate on 110v, and outlets are identical to those used in the U.S.
Climate: Nevis has a tropical climate. The average year round temperature is a balmy 79 degrees. November to May are typically cooler and drier, with more humid and warmer conditions from June to October.
Language: English is the official language of Nevis Island.
Dress: Dress is quite casual, but does tend to be conservative. Shirts and shoes are expected in town, please do not go to town in your bathing suit! And keep that suit on while at the beach. Nude beaches do not exist on Nevis, it is in fact illegal to bathe or sunbathe in the nude.
Driving: Stay left! Custom on Nevis island is to drive on the left hand side of the road. If you are used to driving on the right hand side of the road, this can be a scary thought! But driving on the island of Nevis is not hurried nor crowded (as of yet there has been no need to put up even a single traffic light on Nevis island), so most visitors have no problem with the change. Car rental companies offer vehicles with the steering wheel on the right hand side - - this makes it easier to remember to stay left!
Visitors to the island of Nevis must purchase a temporary driving permit. To do so, you must show your valid driver's license from home. The temporary visitor's driving permit costs about U.S. $25.00 and remains valid for a period of 3 months. Your car rental agency can provide you with the temporary driving permit when you receive your rental car.Cell Phones: Check with your cellular provider to see if they offer service in Nevis. I know many U.S. based providers either do not offer service at all, or only do so at an exorbitant price. Many Nevis island resorts and vacation rental agencies will be glad to arrange for a cell phone for you to use during your stay. If you end up becoming a frequent visitor to Nevis island, you may want to purchase a cell phone with a Nevis number. You can either visit a local cellular provider while on the island, or purchase an unlocked cell phone and a SIM card with a Nevis number.
Internet: Most Nevis island hotels offer Internet access, and many offer Internet access in the rooms. Check with your hotel to be sure. Most vacation rental agencies will be able to arrange for Internet access in your rental house. Free Wi-Fi is also available at Oualie Beach Resort and at Double Deuce Beach Bar.

Nevis is part of the Leeward Islands, and is located about 200 miles southeast of Puerto Rico.
Travel to Nevis Island
Direct flights to Nevis
Liat offers flights into Nevis from Antigua and St. Maarten.
Winair offers flights into Nevis from the Caribbean island of St. Maarten.
Starting November 11, 2011, Cape Air will be offering flights directly into Nevis from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Direct Flights to St. Kitts from the U.S., Canada and Great Britain
At the moment, I find it most convenient to fly into the neighboring island of St. Kitts, and reach Nevis island by boat or ferry.
American Airlines offers several flights per week from the U.S. into St. Kitts.
British Airways offers flights to St. Kitts from Great Britain.
Air Canada will be offering a direct flight from Toronto to St. Kitts starting December 23, 2011 for the peak winter 2011/2012 travel season which ends in April 2012
Getting from St. Kitts to Nevis
Ferry from Basseterre, St. Kitts
From the St. Kitts airport, take a short taxi ride to Basseterre, St. Kitts, and board a ferry to Nevis (the ferry ride to Nevis takes about 45 minutes). Once you purchase your ticket, proceed to the second window to pay a separate tax. The taxi from the airport to the ferry landing costs about $15.00 U.S., and the ferry to Nevis costs about $11.00 U.S. The ferry arrives in Charlestown, Nevis, where numerous taxis are available.
Seabridge from the Southern Peninsula of St. Kitts
You may also take a taxi from the St. Kitts airport (about 20 minutes through what I think is possibly the most beautiful scenery in the world!) to the Southern Peninsula of St. Kitts and board the Seabridge (a car ferry that also accepts pedestrians). The travel time from St. Kitts to Nevis with the Seabridge is about 25 minutes.
If you choose to take the Seabridge, be sure to let your hotel or house rental agency know so you can arrange to have a taxi meet you upon arrival in Nevis. If you choose this option, expect to pay $35.00 U.S. for the taxi ride, then about $8.00 U.S. per person for the Seabridge.
Check the daily ferry and Seabridge schedule here: SKN Vibes Ferry Schedule
Private Water Taxi
Yet another option for reaching Nevis from St. Kitts is to arrange ahead of time for a water taxi. Arrange for a water taxi with your hotel or house rental agency, or contact the following for information (caution: calls to Nevis from abroad can be quite costly- - check with your service provider for rates)
