Guide to Seville, Spain

Seville, or Sevilla in Spanish, is Spain's fourth-largest city and considered one of Andalusia's gems. This southern Spanish city has numerous tourist attractions, starting with its Gothic Cathedral, City Hall, Alcazar Palace, and Plaza d'Espana, as well as a bullring and numerous churches, parks and gardens. Like other cities and towns in Spain, the presence of Moorish architecture is part of its charm. Seville is also noted for flamenco music and dance, as well as its various festivals.

Although Seville is renown for its orange trees, I couldn't help but notice the sweet scent of lilacs and the gentle swaying of the palm trees as my husband and I strolled through the city over the course of several days. If you're traveling on a budget, you may need to pick and choose which of the major attractions you will want to visit; however, staying in self-catering accommodations or budget hotels and taking advantage of low-cost ethnic restaurants will definitely offset these costs.

Seville - On the Map

Map of Spain

Map of Spain - CIA World FactbookSeville is located in the province of Seville in southwestern Spain, in the autonomous region of Andalusia. It is positioned northwest of Cadiz and southeast of Madrid and is the capital of both Andalusia and the province of Seville.

Seville is easily accessible by air, rail or car. Andalusia's second-largest is located just east of the city and Seville is on one of Spain's main rail lines. If you're driving, you won't need a car once you're in Seville as it has good network of city buses as well as a light rail system. Note that the light rail doesn't cover the entire city.

An interesting feature of Seville's layout is that the Guadalquivir River runs through the city, and there are wide, well-maintained walkways along the river. Seville is known for its warm climate, but being by the water helps to alleviate that.

We traveled by train to Seville from Cordova and then took a city bus to reach our holiday apartment. We opted to stay four nights in Seville and were able to visit Seville both on foot and by bus. It is also possible to rent bicycles and/or to use the hop-on-hop-off tourist buses.

Attractions in Seville, Spain

View of bridges from walkway along the river in SevilleSeville's cathedral is the largest and highest in Spain - we walked all the way up to the top of the bell tower to take in panoramic views of the city. The walk up is on a series of ramps, as opposed to stairs. In passing, tickets were 8 Euro each to visit the cathedral, but the ticket also included access to the bell tower.

We explored the historic center (centro) and the Santa Cruz quarter (Barrio de Santa Cruz), Seville's Jewish quarter, on foot. We also enjoyed strolling along the walkway by the Guadalquivir River, which is also open to cyclists and in-line skaters. You'll be in an ideal position for great views of Seville's bridges and you may see a few kayakers and rowers training on the Guadalquivir River. Don't miss the Parque de Maria Luisa (Maria Luisa Park), where you'll find Plaza de Espana, the former Spanish pavillion built for the 1929 Exhibition. It's also possible to rent a small boat and go along the waterway in front of the plaza. If you take a stroll along the former pavillion, you'll view artwork depicting the provinces of Spain. You don't want to miss the incredible photo ops here!
