An Introduction to Wishaw

I have, over the course of the past few years, created quite a few sites on Squidoo in relation to villages, islands, towns and cities in Scotland. I have during that time - I hope understandably - focused on those particular destinations which I believed would have a wider, "Tourist" appeal.

It was mentioned to me at one stage, however, that nowhere did I even refer to where, specifically, in Scotland I was raised. It was something which I gave thought to and decided that yes, it may be appropriate to create such a site upon the town in which I lived for the first thirty-odd years of my life...

Wishaw Library

A traditional library and lots, lots more

Wishaw LibraryWishaw Library is located right in the centre of the town, just off the Main Street, on Kenilworth Avenue. It has an extensive range of books available to borrow but also a wide range of other items such as CD's, computer games and talking books, to name but a few. It also offers its members free Internet access and services such as photocopying and faxing are available at very reasonable prices. There is also a shop where it is possible to order items such as books or DVD's as well as purchase the likes of local interest publications and stationery.

Kenilworth Avenue, Wishaw

A part of Wishaw which has changed very little in decades

Kenilworth Avenue, WishawKenilworth Avenue is indeed the curving road upon which Wishaw Library is located but equally - and in a literal sense - the name refers to the wide, tree-lined thoroughfare that adjoins the main road. There are three narrow roads which run parallel between two rows of houses, interspersed by two, tree-lined grassy verges.

This part of Kenilworth Avenue has changed very little - if at all - within my lifetime. Indeed, my mother has often told me how she used to wheel me along it in my pram in the Autumn and laugh as I used to try to catch the falling leaves!

The History of Wishaw in Pictures and in Text

by Helen Moir

Wishaw
(Images of Scotland)

Wishaw is a town which evolved through the gradual merging of smaller villages such as Coalness (Coltness,) Newmains and Cambusnethan, to name but three. It was the mineral wealth located underground which led to the town's creation and expansion, not just coal, but also iron ore. Coal mining, ironworks and heavy undustry all therefore contributed to the industrialisation of historic Wishaw.

When modern transportation methods reached the town, initially in the form of the Wishaw and Coltness Railway, expansion grew ever more rapid.

Times have of course changed in the electronic age but this magnificent book, complete with more than 200 pictures of old Wishaw, can serve both to bring back happy memories and educate a whole new generation in the way Wishaw used to be.

Belhaven Park, Wishaw

A legacy to a town from a grieving father

Belhaven Park, WishawBelhaven Park sits on the Western edge of Wishaw, just off Dryburgh Road. It is a leafy, grassy area, featuring walkways, benches to sit upon and including a childrens' play area. It was gifted to the town during the First World War by the then Lord Belhaven and dedicated to the memory of his son who had lost his life in the fighting.

Wishaw Bottom Cross

The scene of an ongoing debate

Wishaw Bottom CrossThe recent construction of a new Tesco SuperStore in Wishaw resulted in a major alteration of the traffic system at what is locally referred to as Wishaw Bottom Cross. This has not gone down well with a great many local residents and road users, with additional congestion resulting, as well as the pedestrian crossing from the Main Street having been removed altogether.

Wishaw Golf Club

Wishaw Golf ClubWishaw Golf Club is located at the foot of the town, on Cleland Road. The course is a Par 69 and has some tricky holes, with a total of seventeen of the eighteen greens having a bunker immediately before them.

Wishaw General Hospital

A modern district hospital on the outskirts of Wishaw

Wishaw General HospitalWishaw General Hospital is located to the south-west of Wishaw, off Glasgow Road. It opened in May 2001 as a direct replacement for Law Hospital, near Carluke, which dated back to the Second World War.

Wishaw General has a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department, an MRI scanner and the second largest maternity unit in Scotland.

Food in Scotland

All is not always what it seems

Haggis, Tatties and NeepsThe vast majority of people from overseas, when they think of food in Scotland, will think of such as haggis, shortbread or Aberdeen Angus beef. This is simply because such products are the ones which have gained the widest culinary fame as coming from Scotland. The reality in Scotland, however, is very different and not only are those items supplemented by a great many other foodstuffs in modern times, they always have been.

There are a great many centuries old Scottish dishes and cooking methods which most outwith Scotland have no knowledge of and the truth is that the vast majority of them are far more appealing than the rather unappetising haggis, tatties and neeps pictured right...

hi, I love you lens, I lived in Wishaw from the Age of 1 - 11, I went to Wishaw Academy which I don't think is there now. I lived in Glen Road and spent so much time in the library you described. I never expected to find a lens on Wishaw, thanks so much. :-)
