As time has moved on, so has technology. With old series being dug up to be put on DVD and new series going to press immediately after original airing, the DVD box sets is a great way to watch television in a condensed format. Like Tivo or DVR you can watch at your convenience. Sit down for a marathon session or sample piece by piece. If you are like me, when I find something great I want to enjoy it all now. If a book is great, I will not stop until it is done. If it is a series, I will watch every episode as soon as I can get my hands on the disc.
DVD Subscription By Mail
Along those lines it is not necessary to invest in the Boxed Sets DVD for every series that you would like to watch. Netflix sends via postal mail the disc for any series that is available to watch. Without worry of late fees, watch the boxed sets DVD's as soon or late as you like. This is a great way to watch a series that maybe you would like to see, but figure an investment in the box set is not in order. Watching it once is enough. Also, some old shows may not be as great as we remember them. This way you are not stuck with a purchase you regret, and if the series is something you would like at your disposal, go ahead and buy the boxed sets DVD. Netflix is a subscription, so you really haven't lost money on a disc you may not enjoy as much as you thought or hoped.

The first two seasons of Prison Break are a must see. Developing a list of colorful characters interacting within a prison setting, the plot twists never go exactly as expected. Excitingly, no character, save the principal two characters, is too precious to be kept from extermination at any moment. This is an element that made the Sopranos a wonderful watch. Those who like mysteries without formula or those who have grown jaded with network television, this series doesn't push the envelope, it rips it apart.

24: Season One

24 is a show that didn't interest me initially, so I wound up never watching. Then as it gained in popularity, thought I was too cool to jump on the band wagon. After being introduce to the first disk, I was hooked. Thankfully, at that time there was five seasons to cover. With season six being readied to be released soon. When it was released, I devoured it also. The principal character played by Keifer Sutherland takes the television protagonist into areas never before covered in a television series. Nothing is ever as it seems, and all characters are available to eliminated at any moment. Couple that with Sutherland's thrusting his character to do what is rarely seen on screen, this makes 24 the most exciting series ever.
The premise of the show from Wikipedia - "24 is presented in real time, with each season depicting a 24-hour period in the life of Jack Bauer, who works with the United States government as it fights domestic threats. Bauer is often in the field for the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit as they try to safeguard the nation from terrorist threats. The show also follows the actions of other CTU agents, government officials and terrorists associated with the plot."

The Wire - The Complete First Season

Gritty does not begin to describe The Wire, it is a show that examines and portrays stark realities to urban life. Though character Jimmy McNulty played by Dominic West could be called the lead, it would be disingenuous to what is really an ensemble cast. Even then as the seasons progress characters move in and out of prominence (including McNulty). An exciting feature of the show is it is not a rehashed examination of the human condition, instead the show examines the institutions that move and define humanity. To do that in a fictional drama series is bold, and makes the show excitingly unique.
The premise of the show from Wikipedia - "Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in order: the drug trade, the port, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles."
