Am I a feminist?
If you believe in equal rights and opportunities for all people, chances are you are a feminist. If you think you aren't a feminist because feminists are mean, angry, man hating, hairy, lesbians (pick one or more) than this is the site for you. The goal of this site is to separate feminist truth from myth and start you on a path of your own personal feminism.
In otherwords, it's Feminism 101.

First Things First
answers to the questions feminsits hear all the time
- What can feminism do for me?
- From the Feminism 101 Blog. If you've not been there yet, you really should go.
- What about men? Or, The Patriarchy hurts men too
- The most common "advice" I've gotten since starting this lens is that I should spend more time talking about how Feminism can be good for men. While that is a true statement, click the link for a great argument about why men's needs aren't the focus of the movement.
- What is the patriarchy?
- Most sites about Feminism will refer to the Patriarchy; and blaming it. It's important to note this is not the same as blaming individual men. This site explains what is meant by Patriarchy pretty clearly.
- What do you mean by "Not my Nigel"? (feminist abbreviations/jargon)
- Required reading for new visitors to the Feminist Blogosphere.
- Are feminists angry?
- The most powerful tool of any oppressor is marginalizing those who stand up against them. In few cases has this weapon been employed against a group more thoroughly than it has against women.
- In Defense of Bitterness
- Which isn't to say that feminists are never angry/bitter/disillusioned or what have you. Turns out, it's for good reason.
- The Male Privilege Checklist
- List of advantages one is entitled to just for being born male
- FAQ: What can I do for feminism?
- Now that I'm a feminist, how can I let others know?
- How Prejudice and Bias works
- A great post from The Angry Black Woman on how privilege can make people blind to prejudice and bias in the world around them.
- Is housework really a feminist issue?
- Do you find yourself resenting the amount of work you do to keep your house (and life) in order but find yourself unable to figure out why you can't break the pattern? This article is for you.
- Equally Shared Parenting · Half the Work ... All the Fun
- Welcome to EquallySharedParenting.com, the cyber home for fathers and mothers who have made (or wish to make) a conscious decision to share equally in the raising of their children, household chores, breadwinning, and time for recreation. This site is the brainchild of Marc and Amy Vachon, consultants in equal parenting and equal parents ourselves.
- Will being a feminist hurt my chances of finding a strong hetrosexual relationship?
- Contrary to popular opinion, feminism and romance are not incompatible and feminism may actually improve the quality of heterosexual relationships. The new study also shows that unflattering feminist stereotypes, that tend to stigmatize feminists as unattractive and sexually unappealing, are unsupported.
- What's up with feminism stereotypes?
- Stereotypes of feminists as man-hating, bra-burning troublemakers persist across social and generational divides, but they don't reflect reality.
Great Blogs for New Feminsits
There are lots of great blogs on feminism out there, but some are better starting places than others. Here are my favorites. Please add your own. (If you have a great feminist blog for intermediate or advanced blamers, please add it to the intermediate and advanced list.
The Happy Feminist
The Happy Feminist seems to be on hiatus, but her archives contain some of the best introductions to feminism on the web.0 points
Finally, A Feminism 101 Blog
Just what it sounds like-- an anthology of terminology, Frequently Asked Questions and an over all introduction to what it means (and doesn't mean) to be a feminist.0 points
Feminist Mormon Housewives
I included this blog because it's a great gateway for more traditional women to experience feminism from life experiences similar to their own. The authors are Mormon (obviously) so don't go over there if you can't be respectful--but if you can it's a great place to talk about the struggles between being a wife and mother as well as a feminist.0 points
Official Shrub.com Blog
A great blog in it's own right, but beginner feminists should start with the links in the right hand column under "feminism 101"0 points
Hugo Schwyzer
Flame wars are not unheard of here, so don't start here if you are just getting over the idea that "all feminists are angry", but Hugo discusses all kinds of feminist issues, most notably how to be a male feminist (or feminist ally depending on who you ask)0 points

- To ask for "equal rights for all" is not feminism. It is common sense. People are all equal.

- I wish you were right--but it seems for now feminism is necessary because some people (men) are considered "more equal than others."

- Feminism has its pros and cons. I know it is pretty provocative opinion, but I am always sad when I see for example literary contest for ladies only. Why? Are intellectual possibilities of both sexes so different as physical in athletics? I found such contest as very humiliating and I don't think feminists (both sexes again) should be happy with them.

- Interesting lens. I've been told by others that I should not use the word "feminist" because even though I can relate to all 11 of the points you brought up in the plexo, I'm pro-life.

- Thanks for the comment Joan! You're experience brings up an important point. There are a lot of arguments about who is and who isn't a "real" feminist. I obviously don't speak for feminists everywhere (no one does) but I believe we will all be better off when we work together to end economic and social oppression for women in the areas where we agree.
