From the lens Advice for the New Feminist.

Do you have any advice for new feminists, or advice for me on how to improve this lens? Here's the place to be heard.

To ask for "equal rights for all" is not feminism. It is common sense. People are all equal.

I wish you were right--but it seems for now feminism is necessary because some people (men) are considered "more equal than others."

Feminism has its pros and cons. I know it is pretty provocative opinion, but I am always sad when I see for example literary contest for ladies only. Why? Are intellectual possibilities of both sexes so different as physical in athletics? I found such contest as very humiliating and I don't think feminists (both sexes again) should be happy with them.

Interesting lens. I've been told by others that I should not use the word "feminist" because even though I can relate to all 11 of the points you brought up in the plexo, I'm pro-life.

Thanks for the comment Joan! You're experience brings up an important point. There are a lot of arguments about who is and who isn't a "real" feminist. I obviously don't speak for feminists everywhere (no one does) but I believe we will all be better off when we work together to end economic and social oppression for women in the areas where we agree.

I just published a blog on "Nudity, Morality, and Religion." It should be visible tomorrow. It fits in well with what you have posted in your excellent lens here.

So glad to see this awesome lens filled with thought provoking resources. Just take a look around this world, and you can see that women and girls need to champion themselves for equal rights.

Nice introduction to the subject of feminism. It's a shame that so many women today are somehow afraid to embrace being known as a "feminist" when it's about being treated fairly and equally - wow, what a concept!
  • kab May 27, 2011 @ 9:25 pm | delete
I just don't get when the term "feminist" became a bad thing? Why are women ashamed to say they are one?
  • Gloriousconfusion Apr 1, 2011 @ 9:38 am | delete
If it feels like "it's not fair", then it probably isn't.
Anyway, here are some April Angel Blessings and I'm featuring your lens on "Good Lenses Deserve Angel Blessings" and lensrolling it to my lens about Forced Marriage

I have to admit that it was not too clear for me. You know it is such a topic that people speak about and you get certain feelings... I thought I am just a regular woman, as the other attitude is for younger generation etc. After reading your lens I feel like I am the feminist too! LOL
And I feel good about that :-)

Such a complicated issue! I suppose I have to call myself a "recovering-second-wave-post-feminist-with-pre-patriarchal-values-and-a-non-hetero-normative-belief-system-despite-gender-normative-proclivities"

    Meta Feminism. *head explodes*

I definitely am one too. All for equality, that is what our society is based on, right? :-)

ouch, I guess I'm a feminist. What a wake up call. How to measure a belly button ring
  • HCD Sep 13, 2007 @ 3:41 pm | delete
Great lens!! It's amazing how many people don't know that they are a feminist if they believe in equality of the sexes. They think of it almost as a dirty word. This lens is informative to all women.

I love this lens - you've got great information here. Super job!

Uh oh! Until I read this lens I thought I wasn't a feminist. Great job. A 5 to ya!

Never allow an uninformed person define feminism for you
you. Fear and ignorance drive the
malicious attacks on women, attempting to pit women against one another with stereotypes, judgement and antagonism.
Love being a woman with everything you have and don't buy the "femi-Nazi" line of BS
