Notebooking Our Way Through Discoveries & Exploration

This is the second topic we our doing in our American History Course. I'm already changing it and adding to it. I originally scheduled one week for this topic but I've decided to merge it more with Topic 1 and add in more books. So hard for me to pass up a really good book. This is how we chose to study this time period...

Shout Box!!!

Just give me a shout and let me know you dropped by.

Items to be covered are: John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, Cabeza de Vaca, a couple worksheets, some map work and not to mention some video's to watch. I'm going to try and add some rabbit trail topics here later on for those who do unit studies.

Book List

By merging topics 1 and 2 some of the books from T1 will overlap into T2, so be sure and check the ones I have listed for T1.

Not all of these are going to get done but it's good to have many choices. I may be adding more as I find them. These are listed randomly and not by importance.

John Cabot Notebooking Sheet
It's a notebooking sheet with a picture of Cabot and fill-in-the-blank questions.
Explorers Mini-Books
Lapbook to study the explorers
Theme Project Organizer: Grade 5, Unit 2
This would make for a great project for an older child. I might change some of the questions but it's a good base to start from.

Map Activities

There is a lot of map work in Topic 1 so I don't mind that there's not as much listed here.

Video

There's a lot of video's out there, check your local library first before buying.

Below is a link to the Guest's website were they offer a free American History curriculum. I've used this as the base or spine of our studies. It's a great jumping off point and thankfully she gives great reviews of the living books she uses. This makes it very easy for me to decide on which books to use and helps with the planning. For American History 1 she has created a book list, topic list and a daily planner. I've added more and/or different books, a longer schedule per topic and a different starting and ending points.
